School run stress turns mothers manic

Stressed mothers are putting their children and other road users at risk as they race through the streets on the school run.

Researchers found their heart rates typically soar by 51 per cent, affecting decision-making and provoking aggressive driving.

The average mother makes 28 trips a week, either to schools or ferrying youngsters to extracurricular activities.

But the trips routinely turn into a race against time. Almost half - 47 per cent - admitted to driving aggressively and 37 per cent to cutting up other drivers. More than a quarter had been in an accident while driving their children.

'As mothers hurry between more and more activities, soaring stress levels, deadlines and the distractions caused by tired or excited children are prompting them to take greater risks on the road,' say the authors of a study entitled Mums on the Run.

The fact that fewer children walk to school these days exacerbates the situation. A survey of 1,100 women for the study found that a desperate rush to be on time meant that more than one in three had forgotten to ensure seat belts were done up.

Sixty-nine per cent admitted they regularly break speed limits and 54 per cent jump traffic lights.

With children bouncing up and down, laughing and crying, four in five mothers admitted frequently taking their eyes off the road.

Jane Elgar, 38, found her heart rate rose from a resting level of 80 beats per minute to 126bpm within a minute of starting the car.

Mrs Elgar, who has a daughter Sophie, 11, and son Charlie, nine, said: 'The kids couldn't care less about being late and will carry on shouting at each other.

'As my stress levels rise, I often lose my temper and I know I don't always drive as safely as I should.'

The study was funded by Autoglass, whose managing director, Ian Carlisle, said: 'It seems kids are driving their stressed-out mums to distraction and danger. An ever-expanding range of kids' activities is causing unique driving dangers.'

The company, working with the International Stress Management Association, has prepared a list of safety tips including:

• Add a minute a mile to your journey time, or two in bad weather.

• Make sure you have enough petrol and keep windows clean.

• Relax before you leave. Spend 60 seconds breathing deeply.

• Don't be afraid to stop if a child is distracting you.
