Cons: Lard is made from animal fat which is largely saturated. Consumption of saturated fat increases the body's production of low density lipoprotein or LDL cholesterol - the 'bad' cholesterol that clogs the arteries, and is now irrefutably linked to heart disease and some cancers, including breast cancer. The body is able to manufacture its own saturated fatty acids so you do not need to eat them. The daily guideline intake of saturated fats is 20g for women and 30g for men. Of all foods, fat contains the highest number of calories, weight for weight - more than twice as many calories as starchy food.
