Almost a quarter of people in England and Wales are suffering from high blood pressure which has not been diagnosed, campaigners said today.
The Stroke Association tested the blood pressure of 19,318 people to assess awareness of potential problems.
They found that 23.8 per cent of those tested had high blood pressure without even knowing it.
Some of those tested even needed urgent referrals to doctors to deal with the problem, the charity said.
High blood pressure is a major risk factor for stroke and other cardiovascular diseases.
Some 16 million people in the UK have high blood pressure, with many more unaware they may have the condition which causes 40 per cent of strokes and is a leading contributor to heart disease.
The Stroke Association found the extent of undiagnosed high blood pressure varied across England and Wales.
The South West appeared to have the highest proportion of people with undiagnosed high blood pressure at 29.5 per cent, followed by East Anglia (26.2 per cent) and the the Home Counties (26.1 per cent).
The lowest rates of undiagnosed people were seen in the West Midlands (19.6 per cent), East Midlands (18.8 per cent) and the North East (17.8 per cent).
Professor Averil Mansfield, chairman of The Stroke Association, said: "These statistics reveal that many of us are completely unaware of our own blood pressure level.
"High blood pressure has serious health implications and can lead to a stroke.
"It can be regulated by medication or by changes in diet and lifestyle.
"However the first and most essential step is a regular blood pressure check so that the complications of high blood pressure can be prevented."
The charity called for people to have their blood pressure tested regularly to help maintain a healthy cardiovascular system.
High blood pressure is caused by factors such as smoking, stress, lack of exercise and a poor diet, and the risk increases with age and is above average in ethnic minority groups.
