Diabetics' magic eye

Diabetics could soon be able to check their blood sugar level simply by looking in a mirror, scientists claim.

Researchers are working on a contact lens containing a chemical sensor that measures glucose in the blood - and changes colour if levels are heading for the danger zone.

The device could solve a longrunning problem for diabetics - to find a way to monitor their blood sugar levels which doesn't involve painful needles.

The contact lens is being created at the University of Pittsburgh where chemistry professor Sanford Asher has developed a sensor that can detect glucose in human tears.

'If this all works, this should revolutionise monitoring of glucose by patients,' said Professor Asher. Diabetes is a condition in which the body cannot turn food into energy. Malfunctioning genes stop the pancreas producing insulin, the hormone that regulates blood sugar levels.

There are 1.4million diabetics in Britain, including Olympic rowing hero Sir Steve Redgrave and the Deputy Prime Minister John Prescott.

An estimated million more are thought to be undiagnosed. Currently-some sufferers must endure painful finger testing by pricking themselves several times daily to produce a blood sample.

It is so unpleasant that even the most diligent patients don't test themselves enough, according to doctors.

The contact lens being developed at Pittsburgh is three years away from being available.

Patients will be able to determine their glucose levels by looking in a mirror and comparing the colour with those on a pre-printed chart.

CIBA Vision is also working on a contact lens that would be able to detect glucose levels. The company's concept involves flashing a light over the wearer's eye. The lens would change colour depending on the blood sugar level.

The search for painless monitoring has produced other devices, such as GlucoWatch, which looks like a wristwatch and uses tiny electric currents to monitor blood sugar.
