Too much sleep may cause stroke
Sleeping more than eight hours a night increases the risk of suffering a stroke, scientists have found.
Doctors have regularly extolled the virtues of a good night's sleep as a way of recharging the batteries.
But a study published concludes that regularly spending a long time asleep could disrupt the blood supply to the brain.
The team of U.S. scientists also found that those who snore or regularly feel drowsy during the day are also at risk of a stroke.
Those who slept more than eight hours a night had nine per cent more strokes than those who slept less, the study found.
And those who were sleepy during the day showed a 10 per cent increase in strokes compared with those who felt bright and alert.
The researchers - based at the University of Buffalo in New York state - studied 1,348 adults to find out how many had had a stroke or so-called mini-stroke in the past.
They also wanted to see whether other factors could explain the occurrence of a stroke, such as age, race, gender, smoking, a high cholesterol diet, high blood pressure or diabetes.
The scientists said the three 'abnormal' sleeping patterns - sleeping more than eight hours, snoring and drowsiness - were not necessarily linked and could all be separate causes of strokes.
But both severe snoring and drowsiness can be signs of a condition called sleep apnoea in which sufferers stop breathing for short periods during sleep, depriving their brain and organs of oxygen.
The breathing abnormality often causes snoring and frequent awakening, as the sleeper quickly gasps for breath, and can lead to drowsiness during the day.
Sleep apnoea, which affects four in every 1,000 snorers, has been linked to a 20-fold increase in the risk of a heart attack.
Dr David Smithard, a consultant in stroke medicine, said sleep apnoea had never been linked to people who slept more than eight hours a night.
But he said it might be possible that lying in bed for such a long period of time could in some way decrease the supply of oxygen to the brain.
He added: 'These findings are very interesting, especially for younger people. We know there are a lot of risk factors associated with strokes in old age, but there far fewer risk factors at a younger age.
'This study has highlighted another thing which we now need to consider.'
He stressed the study applied only to people who regularly slept for more than eight hours a night - between four and seven days a week.
Anyone worried about snoring, drowsiness or sleeping too much should consult their GP.
