'Breastfeed to prevent obesity'
The debate over whether breast-feeding protects children against obesity in later life has intensified as child health experts say that the latest research has established a strong link.
Researchers say babies who are breast-fed are at a lower risk of becoming obese, as well as being protected against high blood pressure and cholesterol.
But research published in the British Medical Journal last month, involving more than 5,000 children, found there was little evidence breast-feeding protected youngsters against becoming overweight.
Two pieces of research, carried out in Brazil and London, failed to find support for the claim breast-feeding reduced the risk of obesity.
They pointed out that in the US and Britain the incidence of breast-feeding had increased since 1990, but at the same time so had obesity.
Baby Friendly director Andrew Radford called on the Government to honour its pledge to ban all advertising of bottle feeding and formula milk in a bid to encourage greater breast-feeding.
"The Government should be doing much more to promote breast-feeding if it really wants to tackle the rising levels of obesity in the British population.
"We know that trying to change people's eating habits is extremely difficult, while increasing levels of breast-feeding is relatively easy, particularly in Britain where breast-feeding levels remain shockingly low," he said.
Child nutrition expert Dr John Reilly, of the University of Glasgow, also told Unicef UK's Baby Friendly conference in Bournemouth how research shows babies who are breast-fed are at lower risk of obesity in later life.
Unicef said the Government had yet to fully implement an international code banning the promotion of bottle feeding in UK law, meaning companies could use loopholes to promote products such as bottles and teats.
Mr Radford said: "If the Government is considering banning advertisements for junk food for kids, it should first think about honouring its international obligation to support breast-feeding by banning all bottle-feeding promotion."
