Health Tip: Keep Your Cholesterol Down
March 6, 2006 08:46:18 PM PST
(HealthDay News) -- The amount of cholesterol in your blood has a lot to do with whether you develop heart disease, the U.S. National Institutes of Health stresses.
When there is too much cholesterol in your blood, it builds up in your arteries. Over time this causes "hardening of the arteries," and can lead to the blocking or slowing down of blood to your heart.
This may lead to a heart attack.
Everyone over 20 should have their cholesterol checked. This is done through a simple blood test, usually after fasting.
If you find you have high cholesterol, changes in diet and exercise may help. If not, your doctor may prescribe medication.
