Fruit and fish 'help cut asthma risk'

Research suggests that eating more fruit and fish can reduce the risk of children developing asthma and chronic coughs.

Scientists in Bulgaria studied the diets of more than 20,000 children from six central and eastern European countries.

They found a clear association between eating fish less than once a month and persistent cough or wheeze, while low fruit consumption was linked with cough.

The findings from the National Centre of Hygiene, Medical Ecology and Nutrition in Sofia were reported in the journal Thorax, published by the British Thoracic Society.

Dr John Harvey, chairman of the Society's communications committee said: "This research confirms that a balanced nutritious diet - which includes fresh fruit and vegetables - can improve lung function in children and could help children across the UK breathe more easily.

"There is a growing body of evidence showing that a diet rich in fruit can help children maintain good lung health and it is safe to say that eating fish in moderation as part of a healthy diet could help to reduce the risk of asthma.

"The role of nutrition in preventing lung problems is a fascinating area and needs far more research."

Scientists believe the possible protective effects of fish on health may be due to omega-3 fatty acids in fish oil, which has an anti-inflammatory effect.

Fruit and vegetables are rich sources of a variety of nutrients including vitamins, minerals and fibre. All combat oxidation, bacteria and viruses, assist in detoxification, and stimulate the immune system.
