What can I eat with Candida?

I have recently been diagnosed as having Candida Albicans, which is a great relief after thinking that I was going insane from years of trying to convince doctors I was not making up an extensive range of symptoms.

I have been preparing myself for an anti-candida diet, and I know I will likely feel worse when I start the diet than I do now.

Can you advise me which foods - that are gluten-free, sugar-free, lactose-free, yeast-free - will be the best substitute for sugary snacks when I get my severe cravings for chocolate?

Also, could the diet give me regular periods for the first time in my life? Any other information you can give me about Candida will be most helpful too! Thanks.

After all these years it must have been a relief for your to receive this diagnosis.

And though it will be hard to beat your cravings, the thought of feeling better in a few short months should act as a big spur to your resolve.

For many of us, our only experience of Candida infection is the occasional bout of thrush.

But when it multiplies unchecked - which can be through poor diet, an lowered immune system, overuse of antibiotics or stress - it can cause a long and complicated list of symptoms, including headaches, irritability, digestive problems, allergies and depression.

Treating Candida via diet is effective but takes willpower. There are also many different takes on what you can and can't eat.

From what you've written it seems you have already been advised to avoid gluten and dairy foods, not just sugar and yeast.

So whilst this is 'my' list of allowed foods, please treat it as a guide only and take the individualised medical advice you are offered.

It goes without saying that you need to avoid sugar, yeast, blue cheeses and fermented foods like alcohol and vinegar.

These are the foods it is OK to consume:

Herbal tea, water, decaffeinated coffee, almond milk, unsweetened breakfast cereal, porridge oats, oat bran, almonds, almond butter, sunflower seeds, pumpkin seeds, Brazil nuts, rice cakes, canned and boiled beans, peas, millet, lentils, pasta, buckwheat, tofu and other soya products, brown rice, potatoes in moderation, chicken, fish, lean beef, lamb or veal, eggs in moderation, all vegetables, yoghurt (plain low fat), one glass of skimmed milk daily, extra virgin olive oil, sesame oil, or almond oil, spices herbs, sea salt, homemade mayonnaise, 1/2 lemon daily for salad dressings or adding to water.

If your sugar cravings are overwhelming, I'd suggest keeping on hand a tiny amount of 70 per cent cocoa solid chocolate which is much lower sugar than the standard stuff.

A small amount of this, if it's enough to keep you on the straight and narrow, should be okay.
