Will tablets help my psoriasis?
The build-up of white plaques in psoriasis is caused by over-production of skin cells. This process can be reduced by giving powerful drugs that were originally developed to treat cancer, together with exposure to high intensity ultraviolet light ( UVB).
One of three drugs is usually given - either methotrexate, acitretin or cyclosporin. All of these have the potential to cause quite severe side effects, which is why careful monitoring is important.
The risks vary according to the drug used, but can include reduction of the white cell count, inflammation of the liver, reduced kidney function, and high blood pressure.
Your skin specialist should be happy to give you more information about your specific treatment, and do not be afraid to ask questions if you want to.
