Is pregnancy safe if I'm overweight?

Thanks for your question. You don't mention how overweight you are, but there are two issues here. Firstly, will being overweight affect your chances of falling pregnant? And secondly, are there any problems being pregnant if you don't lose some weight? From the available research, it is not clear whether being overweight has a major effect on fertility. Some studies have found that it can take longer to fall pregnant if weight is a problem, yet others have not highlighted this as a major problem.

We do know for sure that if you do have difficulties then fertility investigations are more risky (for example, having a laparoscopy to check that the tubes are not blocked). There is also evidence that fertility treatments are much less likely to work. Being overweight puts you at greater risk of some diseases, such as diabetes and high blood pressure. These are also complications which can develop during pregnancy, even if you never had them before and unfortunately they are more likely to occur in women who are overweight.

Both can affect the baby's growth and have an impact on his or her health in the womb. Heavier women tend to have larger babies and this can increase the chance that you will need an assisted delivery or caesarean section.

This type of surgery puts you at increased risk of bleeding, infection or developing a blood clot in the leg or lung (thrombosis). Having said all of this most women do indeed have a healthy pregnancy and birth, but it is definitely a good idea to reduce your risk of these complications by losing some weight before falling pregnant. Good luck - even with good motivation, I know how difficult it can be.
