Seeing spots in front of your eyes
Many people see little black spots dancing in front of their eyes occasionally.
These 'floaters' are very common and normally harmless, according to David Cartwright, President of the College of Optometrists. But if they suddenly appear much more frequently or you notice an increase, particularly if you're very short-sighted or have just had an accident or bump on the head, he advises seeing an optometrist immediately (or a hospital A&E at weekends) to ensure there's no damage to the retina – a painless but sight-threatening condition called retinal detachment.
Seeing flashes or shadows of light, with or without floaters, is a symptom of retinal detachment, which also needs expert investigation.
Corrective surgery can be performed for a torn retina – but it's imperative to do it as early as possible.
For qualified optometrists, look in yellow pages, or www.yell.com For information on retinal detachment, www.nhsdirect.nhs/uk
Just a pinch of salt
Eating too much salt can raise blood pressure, increasing the risk of heart disease and stroke. Experts advise a maximum of 6g of salt daily – preferably 3g, the amount recommended for children.
It's easy to reduce the amount you add to food at home but prepared foods often list salt as sodium, which is deceptive because 1g of salt is just 0.4g of sodium.
To help you tot up the amounts as you're whizzing round the supermarket, the Food Standards Agency is giving away free, credit-card-sized Salt-o-meter cards. Call 0845 606 0667 for yours.
