Virgin Cancer Cover
Virgin Cancer Cover is the only policy of its kind in the UK. It is dedicated to helping people cope with the financial impact of cancer and is the most comprehensive cancer cover around.
The cover is designed to let you claim at an earlier stage of illness than comparable policies, and claim several times if necessary. Virgin Cancer Cover means you could get access to the money you need, when you need it. The policy also gives life and terminal illness cover (whether cancer-related or not).
The amount the policy will cost on a monthly basis depends on how much you wish to pay, how much cover the overall policy is for and your personal circumstances. Virgin Cancer Cover can cover you from age 18 to 69.
Pay-outs
Virgin Cancer Cover doesn't necessarily pay out once and that's it. You can claim more than once for different types or stages of cancer up to your maximum cover amount. You can also claim for death or terminal illness, whether it's cancer-related or not.
Most companies don't pay out for early stages of cancer. But with Virgin Cancer Cover, if you’re diagnosed with "early cancer", you get 10 per cent of your cover amount. Virgin Cancer Cover can even pay out for several different cancers over the years.
If the cancer is further on when it's spotted, and is what is termed "intermediate cancer", Virgin Cancer Cover will pay out 25 per cent of your cover amount at that time. For breast cancer, 25 per cent is paid out whether it's diagnosed at the early or intermediate stage.
All pay-outs added together can't be more than 100 per cent of your cover amount - each claim paid out reduces the amount of cover you've got left. And if you've got decreasing cover your cover amount is designed to go down each month in a similar way to your repayment mortgage.
Level cover gives you the peace of mind that you always know what your pay-out would be. Decreasing cover makes your premiums cheaper, and is designed to go down during your cover term. It is based on a repayment mortgage with a 10 per cent yearly interest rate. So as long as you're not paying a mortgage with a yearly interest rate of more than 10 per cent, it could work to your advantage.
If the worst happens and the cancer is advanced when you're diagnosed, or you become terminally ill or die during the term of your cover, whatever your cover amount is at the time, you'll get the lot.
Your premium will never alter as a result of any changes in your health or personal circumstances, or because you've already made a claim for cancer. For every customer the cost of cancer cover is reviewed on each five year anniversary of their start date. This will be based on the expectation of future claims and the cost of reinsurance. Your premium may then go up, stay the same or reduce.
What isn't covered?
The only cancers not covered are non-melanoma skin cancers and early forms of cervical cancer.
The policy does not cover benign, non-malignant or pre-malignant conditions (these aren't classified as cancer).
A cancer claim cannot be accepted where the cancer started in the first 90 days of the policy and any unreasonable failure to seek or follow medical advice would mean you won't be covered.
If you’ve got cancer currently, you will not be offered cover; if you've had cancer in the past, you may not be able to get cover.
