Why weight-loss culture can harm baby
Mothers could be damaging their children's health by applying their own weight-loss regimes to their babies' diets, a survey has found.
The research discovered many women were feeding their babies low fat, low calorie meals, which could harm their development.
Dietician Luci Daniels said: "An increasing number of mums worry that their baby is, or could become, overweight and are feeding low fat foods and low calorie meals that are unsuitable.
"The research suggests that some mums are using their knowledge of adult weight loss and 'healthy eating' when choosing what their babies eat, without understanding that it could be damaging for their child.
"Low energy intakes in babies and toddlers often leads to faltering growth, and could even affect development. A healthy weaning diet is not the same as a healthy adult diet."
Research by baby milk company SMA Nutrition found that only three per cent of women thought fat and two per cent thought carbohydrate was the most important aspect of their babies' diet, but 43 per cent nominated vitamins and minerals, 17 per cent iron and 15 per cent calcium.
Over half of mothers asked (51 per cent) said they had insufficient knowledge on how to switch their babies from milk to solid foods.
The survey, conducted through Mother & Baby magazine, found 27 per cent of mothers were introducing their babies to solids at three months or earlier, against Government advice on weaning.
Some 25 per cent are introducing cows' milk as a main drink to their baby's diet before 12 months, earlier than current government advice.
Ms Daniels said: "The majority of mums are getting it right. However the fact that as many as one in four are introducing solids and a similar number are making the switch to cows' milk too early, is a cause for concern.
"Weaning before four months is not recommended due to the immaturity of a baby's gastrointestinal tract and kidneys, and also because co-ordination, which allows safe swallowing, may not be developed enough.
"If mums wait until four months they may find the whole weaning process much less stressful and a smoother transition from either breast or bottle milk to mixed feeding. Introducing cows' milk as a main drink before a full year is associated with an increased risk of developing iron deficiency anaemia."
The main concerns of women who were introducing solids to their babies' diets was that they were not eating enough (43 per cent) and that the food was nutritionally deficient (28 per cent).
Some 23 per cent worried that their babies were eating unsuitable food which could make them ill, while 19 per cent admitted worrying about a diet dominated by "processed" jars and bottles. ends
