The body doctor
Recognised as one of the world's leading cellulite experts, Dr Elisabeth Dancey initially worked as a GP. Author of the bestselling book The Cellulite Solution, the celebrities turn to her for help.
According to Dr Dancey, cellulite is unhealthy fatty tissue.
"Fatty tissue is not simply a storage tissue," she says. "It is a reservoir for energy and fatty acids. It keeps us warm, protects us from knocks and bumps, acts as a buffer tissue for environmental toxins and contributes to the immune system.
"As the ovaries slow down their production of oestrogen, manufacture of this important female hormone is switched to the fat around the hips and abdomen.
"Healthy fat is warm, soft, smooth and curvaceous, covered by spongy pink skin. Unhealthy fat is lumpy, bumpy with areas of hot and cold, covered by dimply, orange-peel skin. This is cellulite.
"Women develop cellulite for the simple reason that they tend to store fat on their legs. And the legs are prone to changes in the circulation and drained by a very precarious vein and lymph mechanism.
"Fluid accumulation - known technically as stasis - appears to be at the root of the cellulite process. Men store fat on their tummies, so they don't have the same problem."
This is not all. As flow within the fat cells slows, back-pressure is created rather like a motorway traffic jam and the circulation slows, limiting delivery of essential oxygen and nutrients to the fat cells. Metabolic toxins build up (they need oxygen to neutralise them) making the situation worse.
What was once healthy, wellnourished fatty tissue is now sludged-up cellulite tissue with a poor circulation. Areas of hot and cold tissue bulge out from the general mass, distorting the silhouette and causing the delightfully named "steatomes" - literally translated as "lumps of fat".
To combat cellulite, Dr Dancey recommends changes to your diet and lifestyle. "Diet is the key. Too much wheat (bread, pasta, biscuits and flour) in the diet seems to make cellulite worse primarily because of its effect on the digestive system. Limit your intake to once a day.
Pineapple, papaya and blackcurrant have been shown to break down the fibres between fat cells. Eating plenty of brightly-coloured fruit and vegetables is important, too, as these contain the antioxidants, anthocyanidins and polyphenols that help to remove cellular toxins and assist in the formation of good-quality elastin fibres in the skin.
"Avoid salt and cut out all fats that the body cannot metabolise.
"A major cause of obesity and cellulite are trans-fatty acids, the so-called industrial fats or hydrogenated vegetable oils found in junk food and ready meals. These are designed to give food a long shelf-life. But they don't just hang around on the shelves, they sit on hips, bottoms and thighs too.
"With hydrogen added to their chemical structure to make them solid or semi-solid at room temperature, hydrogenated fats are a different shape to naturallyoccurring fats and interfere with our metabolism. Virtually all ready-made food contains these cellulite-enhancers. Avoid them and over-processed artificial sweeteners and sweets.
"Exercise boosts healthy blood circulation and the lymphatic system. Just ten minutes a day will make vast improvements to cellulite. Manual lymph drainage, a medical massage technique, can also show real results."
