Scientists have developed a drug which could boost women's sexual desire and their enjoyment of lovemaking.
The breakthrough could revolutionise the lives of the millions of British women who admit they suffer from frustration in their love lives.
One in five women says she has lost all pleasure in lovemaking and one in three is worried about the future of her sex life.
The drug, delivered as a fastacting nasal spray, is designed to work directly on the central nervous system, making the brain send messages to nerves in the sexual organs.
Research suggests it will work for both men and women. As with Viagra, tests have suggested it can help a man to achieve an erection 15 minutes after it is sprayed into the nose.
But experts are particularly pleased by the prospect of an effective treatment for female sexual problems. So far, tests have been carried out on men but not women. But the results of tests on female rats are so encouraging - suggesting the drug can 'significantly enhance' sexual behaviour - that its developers believe it could represent a major breakthrough.
If human trials are successful, scientists say that the drug, which has been given the code PT141, could be available within three years.
Experts believe that sexual dysfunction in women is usually a physical problem rather than a psychological one.
A few women have tried Viagra, which was designed to treat sexual problems in men by improving blood flow, since its launch in 1998.
But the evidence of its effect on women remains contradictory, with some studies suggesting no significant benefit and others finding that it can boost desire.
Most women with sexual problems simply suffer in silence, while those who seek help are usually offered psychological or sexual therapy.
In trials, PT141 seems to encourage female rats to seek out males for sex, which in turn heightens their sexual arousal.
A study of 40 female rats showed a three-fold to five-fold increase in sexual appetite.
Scientists believe that the drug works by triggering nerves that make blood vessels open or dilate.
The system is similar to the way that the central nervous system can trigger blushing.
Safety trials in men suggested that the drug might be free of some of the side effects associated with Viagra.
Since Viagra's launch, there have been reports of 60 men dying from heart problems after taking the drug.
But PT141 appeared to have little impact on blood pressure, heart rate or respiration and had no other serious side effects.
The drug is being developed by researchers at Concordia University in Montreal, Canada, and the company Palatin Technologies.
The company plans next to test the drug on women with sexual problems.
While it was being stressed yesterday that the drug is at the early stages of development, Professor Jim Pfaus, who is carrying out the research at Concordia University, said: 'It could be bigger than Viagra.
'There's nothing in the arsenal now to treat female sexual dysfunction. That's one of the things that's really promising about this drug.'
