The rate of people who have serious allergies to nuts is on the increase. Some allergies are so severe they are fatal. Here we provide you with ten things to know about nut allergies.
A nut allergy is the most serious form of food allergy.
Around one in 100,000 people in Britain has a severe reaction to nuts, but it is thought that up to one in 200 children suffers a reaction of some sort when they eat food containing nuts.
More than 20 healthy young people in the UK every year will die as a result of their allergy, and the number of cases is rising.
4 An allergic reaction to nuts, including the most extreme form, anaphylactic shock, occurs because the body's immune system wrongly perceives the nut as a threat.
5 An anaphylactic reaction is caused by the sudden release of chemical substances, including histamine, from cells in the blood and tissues where they are stored.
This mechanism is so sensitive that minute quantities of nuts can cause a reaction. The released chemicals act on blood vessels to cause swelling in the mouth and anywhere on the skin.
There is a fall in blood pressure, and in asthmatics the effect is mainly on the lungs.
Pre-loaded Adrenalin injection kits are available on prescription for those believed to be at risk. The injection must be given, as directed, as soon as a serious reaction is suspected and an ambulance must be called. If there is no improvement in ten minutes, a second injection may be needed.
The reason peanuts and nut derivatives are so allergenic remains unknown, though the rise in prevalence is probably due to increased exposure, because of widespread use of peanuts in food manufacture.
The problem appears to be increasing and the age of onset is getting younger - it is increasingly being reported during the first year of life.
