Why sex is good for you
The secret of a healthy life could be far simpler than battling with a diet, exercise regime or trying to give up smoking. According to scientists regular sex does wonders for your health.
Medical experts claim making love can slow down the ageing process, improve the immune system, boost circulation and make you live longer.
Dr David Weeks, clinical neuropsychologist at the Royal Edinburgh Hospital, believes the most effective way to keep your youthful looks is to maintain an active love life.
In his study, Dr Weeks questioned more than 3,500 volunteers aged between 18 and 102. He concludes that couples who make love three times a week look between four and seven years younger than those who have less sex.
'Sex is an excellent aerobic exercise because it raises the heart beat and pumps oxygen around the body which improves the immune system, boosts circulation and keeps you lean,' he said.
But he points out people who are promiscuous do not reap the health benefits of sex. 'This is because a healthy sexual relationship combines physical and psychological ties. Loyalty is part and parcel of a fulfilling sex life,' he says.
Here we look at ten health benefits of sex.
Keeps you looking young: According to research by Dr Weeks, people who have sex three times a week look between four and seven years younger.
This is because sex is an aerobic form of exercise which promotes skin renewal. Vigorous action during sex means higher levels of oxygen are being pumped around the body bringing blood flow and nutrients to the skin's surface.
Thanks to blood being pumped around the body, fresher skin cells lying deep down in the skin are pushed up higher to the surface of the skin. This helps to create a younger appearance because the cells sit higher up on the skin's surface.
Makes you fit: Although sex is not the most efficient way to lose weight, you can burn between 100 and 250 calories an hour and also exercise the major muscle groups.
If you have moderately active sex twice a week, you burn an extra 5,000 calories a year - the equivalent of a 50 mile run at a slow pace. Having regular sex and going to the gym are mutually beneficial because you burn up even more calories.
Lifts your mood: When women reach orgasm they release a sex hormone called oxytocin produced by the pituary gland - the oval gland at the base of the brain.
Oxytocin generates emotional feelings such as warmth and nurturing which helps to increase bonding between two people. This hormone is released only in women and is the same hormone secreted after childbirth. During orgasm it is released in smaller amounts than during labour for the duration of around 20 minutes.
Keeps you lean: Sexual intercourse raises levels of insulin-like growth factors (IGF) - a hormone that controls the activity of enzymes within those cells responsible for fat metabolism. When higher levels of IGF are released, this helps to break down fatty tissue in the body and promote lean muscle instead.
Improves the immune system:
Studies have shown that orgasm can help stimulate the immune system. An American study by Dr Dudley Chapman of Ohio University College of Osteopathic Medicine reveals that breast cancer sufferers who experienced regular orgasms recovered faster than those who didn't.
This happens because orgasm boosts levels of T3 and T4 lymphocyte cells - a type of white blood cell that produces antibodies and is shown to fight infection by as much as twenty per cent.
Reduces stress: There is strong scientific evidence that orgasm triggers the release of endorphins - the feel-good chemicals secreted by the brain that act as effective painkillers.
During orgasm, higher levels of blood flood the body and this takes pressure away from the brain. Also, relaxation after an orgasm reduces tension in all muscle groups, especially the neck and back.
Helps protect the heart: Sex has particular benefits for men, especially if they are over 40. Research suggests that sex can help raise the level of testosterone - the male hormone - which is said to protect the heart.
Sex slightly increases the amount of testosterone being released in the body due to the bouncing action of the testes during sexual intercourse.
Improves circulation and aids detox: Sex is a good detox because it makes you sweat. Sweating profusely means the skin - which is the main organ of elimination - removes toxins from the body.
Aerobic exercise also improves blood circulation because it allows oxygen and nutrients to flow into the bloodstream more easily.
Prolongs life: Researchers have linked longevity with frequency of sex for both men and women. A recent study of 1,000 men in Wales, found that those who had two or more orgasms a week halved their risk of dying prematurely compared with those who had one orgasm a month.
Lowers pregnancy risks: A study in 1994 found that women in a long-term relationship may be less likely to have complications in pregnancy.
Researchers from McMaster University in Ontario, Canada, found that preeclampsia - a potentially dangerous condition that may develop in late pregnancy and may lead to convulsions if not treated - was significantly more common when conception had occurred within the first year of a sexual relationship.
The study showed that women in a long-term relationship were exposed longer to their partner's semen before pregnancy and this plays a vital role in preventing the disorder.
