Going to arms' lengths
IF the idea of exposing your biceps and triceps fills you with dismay, now is the time to transform flabby upper arms, motley skin and dimples into shapely limbs that you'll never want to cover again.
Flab control
The quickest way to tone loose, flabby skin on the under side of the upper arms, which can quickly develop once you're past 35, is to exercise with small weights.
Use light hand-weights of around 1-1.5 kg each and start with five repetitions of each exercise, building up to ten or as many as you can.
Martin Shervington is a trainer of 'integrated practice', which shows how to incorporate different types of exercise into your life.
He says: 'These biceps and triceps toners are simple enough to do when you have five or ten minutes spare at home - you can easily do them in front of the TV.'
For biceps...
Hold weights with arms extended to the front of the body and palms upwards. The upper arms should be held tightly against your sides as you curl the weights up to the chest. Slowly lower back to the start.
For triceps...
1. To tone underarm muscles, hold the weights against your shoulders with arms bent upwards and palms away from the body. Without moving any other body part, lift the weights above the head and straighten arms. Return the weights to the shoulder position.
2. Hold one weight at arm's length above the head, palms facing outwards. Without moving the upper arm from this position, bend the arm at the elbow and allow the weight to lower behind the head. Extend the arm back to the upwards, straight position. Repeat holding the weight with the other arm.
For the whole arm...
1. Stretch and tone the upper arm by holding your arms straight out behind your back as high up as you can manage, with a weight in each hand. Slowly bounce your arms together; get them as close as you can - touching if possible.
2. Hold the weights with arms straight ahead at waist level and push each arm alternately in front of you, as if 'punching' towards the ground.
Exfoliation
Skincare expert Dr Colette Haydon says: 'The first step towards smooth arms is to exfoliate the whole of the arm, right down and including the backs of the hands.
'Elbows often get neglected because you can't see them unless you make a special point of looking at them in the mirror.
'The skin may look rough, wrinkly and red. A normal body exfoliator is too mild for elbow problems, so try a special exfoliating product containing pumice grains. Work away the rough skin and then moisturise well, twice a week, until the skin softens.'
Body exfoliating products should be used in the bath or shower. Once the skin is damp, rub the 'scrub' in gently and rinse.
Try Woodspirits Seaweed Scrub (£15.95, mail order 0181-293 4949). It comes in a lovely glass jar with bright green blended oils, which you mix into the salt layer at the bottom with a shell-shaped scoop.
Algascience Tonifying Body Scrub (£8.95, mail order 01488 648 100) is a bright blue combination of marine minerals and trace elements found in fresh seaweed, while Gatineau Body Scrub (£24.25: stockists 0800 731 5805) is a fresh pink gel containing soft polishing grains.
Good value is Marks & Spencer Spa Treatment From The Sea Body Exfoliator (£3.50) with Dead Sea minerals, rockweed and palm oil.
Woodspirits Almond Flip Exfoliating Almond Soap Bar (£6.75) smells delicious and is particularly cost-effective as it lasts for ages.
Tackle problem elbows with Body Shop Pumice Foot Scrub £3.99 or Crabtree & Evelyn Gardeners Hand Scrub With Pumice (£10.50), followed with Body Shop Elbow Grease (£5) to soften skin.
Banish blotches
'Another problem with baring our arms,' says Colette Haydon, 'is that the circulation may be poor and the skin may look mottled with red or purple blotches. If it becomes chilly and you get goose bumps, it makes matters worse.
'Using an anti-cellulite cream should help. Don't worry if it says it's for legs, there are no specific products for arms as far as I'm aware. How effective many of these products are in reducing cellulite is not certain, but they are formulated to speed up a sluggish circulation and this will improve blotchy skin.
'These creams should be massaged into the upper arms morning and night, if possible, for maximum effect.'
Try improving circulation with Decleor Aromessence Slendisium (£29), an anti-cellulite treatment containing oils of lemon grass, rosemary, patchouli and geranium or Lancome Reflexe Contour (£29), a pink gel complex of caffeine with ivy and ginkgo.
Or try Scholl Active, Busy Leg Cream (£6.05), an oxygen therapy that helps banish water retention and stimulate circulation, and Christian Dior Body Light Ultra-Refining Serum (£26), which is refreshing and has botanical extracts.
A weekly self-massage of the arms with essential oils immediately after an evening bath or shower will also benefit circulation and help improve colour.
Good essential oils for a weekly aromatherapy self-massage are Zarvis Roman Massage Oil (£14.50) with soya, peanut, safflower and spearmint, and Cariad Aromatherapy Circulation Blend or Cariad Dimply Skin Blend (£10.40 each: stockists 01932 269921).
Go for the glow
Slender, toned lily-white arms may look lovely, but less than perfect limbs may look better with a subtle fake tan.
Add a slight shimmer and your arms will take on a healthy glow - remember, though, to extend the fake tan to your chest and other exposed parts, such as upper back, collarbone and shoulders.
The best light and natural-looking fake tans for arms are: Lancome's new Flash Bronzer Self-Tanning Leg Gel (£15), which works just as well for arms, is easy to apply and gives a slight shimmer and Coty Personal Colour Self-Tanning Body Lotion (£5.25).
Finish off the healthy glow with Nuxe's Huile Prodigieuse in Gold (£22.50, Space NK), which is a dry, light oil.
