Natural cures for stressed-out skin

Their names sounded very exotic when they started to filter through from far-flung corners of the globe and on to our bathroom shelves -jojoba, aloe vera, jasmine.

But now that these plant ingredients are household names, a new generation of botanicals is finding its way into our face creams, body lotions and shampoos, some of them with the sort of therapeutic properties we're more used to finding in alternative medicine.

'There are a great many botanicals that we've heard about in alternative medicine and many of them are perfect as active ingredients in skincare products,' says natural skincare expert Liz Earle.

'Camphor, for example, traditionally used as a cold remedy to help clear the airways, is wonderful for brightening the skin, and echinacea, an immune-system strengthener, is excellent for stimulating collagen and elastin to improve skin's texture.'

Face Savers

Stress is the buzzword of the decade but it's not only our minds that suffer: beauty experts talk about our skin being stressed, too.

Cassandra Duncan, of leading cosmetics company Lancome, says: 'A recent finding shows that the brain transmits messages to the nerve fibres in the skin when it's stressed. In response, the skin's balance is disrupted and it can look uncomfortable and taut, and even come out in blotches.'

Decleor has produced Purete Exfoliante (£18.85), containing papaya to comfort the skin and sweet almond oil to give a gentle scrub while preventing irritation. Origins Comforting Solution (£14.50) contains the Oriental herb panax ginseng to help energise the skin, and Neal's Yard Remedies Mallow And Rose Moisturiser (£6.50, mail order 0161-831 7875) softens and soothes dry and irritated skin with calendula and almond oil.

Liz recommends her Intensive Nourishing Treatment (£8.50, mail order 01983 565222) with oil of St John's wort - a herb usually noted for its antidepressant properties - which, she says, is anti-inflammatory and is good for soothing and nourishing sensitive skin.

Lancome's Vitabolic Radiance Booster (£25) is a velvety cream-gel treatment which contains circulation-boosting ingredients we may be more familiar with in supplement form: ginseng, vitamin C and gingko biloba. Or try Virgin Vie Stay Calm Day Moisturiser (£14) with anti-inflammatory liquorice and soothing aloe vera.

Liz Earle says natural clays used in skin treatments such as Brightening Treatment (£9.50) give the perfect base for many botanicals.

'White clay has powerful properties of absorption and decreases the level of surface bacteria on the skin by as much as 77 pc. 'White clay also helps promote cell oxygenation, which encourages firmness and a more even skin tone. I have found that Chinese camphor, witch hazel and St John's wort blended with white clay acts as a fast-acting pick-me-up, giving a radiant glow.'

Body blitz

Dull skin indicateS a sluggish circulation. There are lots of new plant-based products which promise to tone, smoothe and revitalise, but they will work more effectively if you are prepared to help make the skin more receptive first.

Liz Earle suggests dry brushing to keep the skin 'active' and help the ingredients in plant-based bodycare products do their work. 'This is an easy and inexpensive way to keep the pores clear. The bristles act directly on the lymph vessels and capillaries to stimulate circulation, removing impurities from under the surface,' says Liz. 'Use a good quality bristle body brush and use firm strokes, upwards towards the heart. If at first the brush feels rough against your skin, don't be tempted to soften it with water - persevere!

Julie Burgess, beauty therapist at The Life Centre in Kensington, says: 'Aromatic plants certainly have some volatile ingredients to refresh the skin's surface, and their scents alone can make us feel better. 'Hops are widely used in skin treatments and contain plant oestrogens which influence skin metabolism and are believed to have rejuvenating effects.'

Shiseido's new Advanced Essential Energy range promises to 'enhance the beauty of your body by energising it from within'. Based on botanical extracts from the East, including green tea, cherry blossom and silken rice, the Body Refining Complex (£23) leaves skin feeling supple and silky.

Another effective, though expensive, botanical body treatment is Sisley's Botanical Special Body Contour Cream (£65) containing horsetail, green tea, butcher broom and capsicum to tone, firm and smooth cellulite. Or try Bloom Luxurious Body Cream (£11.25, mail order 0171-372 4101), a deliciously fragrant, super-smooth blend of mandarin, sandalwood and ylang ylang.

Superspritzers

Well worth trying are the botanical 'superspritzers' which are beautifully refreshing for summer. They cool the body and moisturise the skin with a fine aromatic mist.

Depea Water by Shu Uemura (£10, mail order, 0171-379 6627) gives the skin a moisture surge by infusing sea water with plant and fruit extracts, including hamamelis to soothe, camomile to calm and melissa to stimulate.

Lancome has launched its Energising Body Treatment Range, including the Cooling Body Smoother (£19.50) with cardamom, ginger, lime and green tea.
