What can I eat to help prevent the pain of gallstones
As cholesterol is the primary ingredient in most gallstones, it's sensible to avoid too many saturated or animal fats.
A recent study of people in southern Italy found that a diet rich in sugars and animal fats and poor in vegetable fats and fibre was a significant risk factor for gallstones. By comparison vegetarian diets have been found to be protective.
Coffee increases bile flow and therefore might reduce the risk of gallstones. Bile is an emulsifying agent similar to washing up liquid that helps the 'greasy' stones being formed.
However, it's less likely to help after the stones have already been formed and you need to take care because too many caffeinated beverages can aggravate symptoms of insomnia and anxiety.
Constipation is another factor which can make gallstones worse, so be sure to eat plenty of whole grains including a bran cereal for breakfast every day.
Some gallbladder attacks - though not the stones themselves - have been reported to result from food allergies. One study reported eggs, pork, and onions to be the most common triggers, so you could try eliminating these for a while.
Other lifestyle changes that might help are losing weight if you need to. But do this sensibly though, as rapid weight loss can actually increase the risk of stone formation. You can also try taking regular exercise.
Nutritional supplements that may be helpful include vitamin C, milk thistle and phosphatidylcholine (PC) - a purified extract from lecithin.
