Can bathing in wine make you younger and cure cellulite?
After a few glasses of your favourite tipple, it's easy to feel younger, but could bathing in a barrel of Bordeaux really make you look younger?
According to fans of an alternative programme called vinotherapy - wine can help reduce wrinkles, shift cellulite and even provide an effective facelift.
The technique, carried out in France at the first wine spa in the world, involves being wrapped, massaged and smothered in extracts from some of France's finest wines.
Such mouthwatering treats are on offer at Les Sources De Caudalie, hidden among the vineyards of an eighteenth century chateau near Bordeaux in south-west France.
And if this isn't enough - you are encouraged to smother yourself with Caudalie's range of grapeseed beauty products.
So what is vinotherapy and how does it work? Practitioners claim vinotherapy can boost circulation, shift cellulite and make you feel invigorated thanks to grapeseed oil - its key ingredient.
This is because, they say, polyphenols extracted from grape seeds are a powerful antioxidant - our body's defences against highly-reactive molecules that can lead to premature ageing.
The benefits of drinking red wine are already well-known. According to new research red grapes - the main ingredient of red wine - contain beneficial plant chemicals known as flavanoids. Flavanoids are said to help stop platelets -fragments of red blood cells found in our blood - from becoming too sticky. Smooth platelets prevent blood clotting - which reduces the risk of heart disease.
Grapes have also been shown to play an important role in protecting against cancer. This is because of important phytochemicals - plant-based chemicals which produce 'antioxidant' activity. This is our body's defence mechanism against highly-reactive molecules that can lead to disease.
And, according to practitioners of vinotherapy, wine when applied externally, can help shift cellulite, tone our body and reduce wrinkles and fine lines.
A typical vinotherapy programme involves a hot red wine bath fitted with strategically placed jets designed to boost circulation. This is because heat and pulsating water hitting our body have strong cardiovascular effects. According to experts when we sweat the heart pushes the blood to the surface, opening up the skin vessels which promotes blood circulation.
For those looking to banish cellulite, a honey and wine wrap is a must. After being smothered in wine, yeast, honey from Bordeaux and essential oils, you are enveloped in a warm winey wrap for 20 minutes. This, say vinotherapists, can help shift cellulite - a build up of fatty, toxic and water deposits in your skin.
Alternatively, you may be offered a Merlot wrap - a hot application of local clay and organic essential oils that helps relax the body and promote healthy skin. Being smothered in warm minerals helps kick start the body's lymhphatic system. This in turn helps flush out toxins from the body.
Or, you might opt for a full body massage - which uses white grapeseed oil combined with jets of warm spring water rich in minerals such as iron - that nourishes and draws impurities from the skin.
Those looking for an alternative face lift might be persuaded to try out a vinolift.
This procedure involves an application of resveratrol - a natural chemical found in grape skins - and electrical stimulation - where tiny currents delivered through a small probe help lift and reshape the contours of the face.
And determined detoxers are offered a grape cure, where you eat nothing but grapes for three to six days. Red grapes are a good source of potassium and trace minerals such as magnesium and copper which help nourish the body when detoxing.
'People are getting bored with traditional treatments using seaweed and mud, so we wanted to come up with something different,' explains the spa's owner Daniel Cathiard.
'We consulted health experts about the possibility of using red wine, and our tests have shown it really can help you shift cellulite and feel invigorated.
'We don't just use any old plonk. The wine we use is worth between three and eight pounds a bottle depending on the treatment. And for those who still have the stomach for it, it is also said to go very well with beef at dinner.'
But although many dermatologists agree that red grapes can play a role in preventing serious diseases such as cancer when eaten, they remain sceptical of claims that the body can absorb anti-ageing chemicals - and affect its appearance.
'Evidence shows that antioxidants can help slow down ageing,' says Jan McGregor, consultant dermatologist at the Royal London Hospital.
'However, it is unlikely that a signficiant amount of antioxidants absorbed by the skin will have an effect.
'The only way to slow down ageing is to avoid the sun and eat a healthy diet.'
• The cost of vinotherapy costs from £288 for a relaxing treatment programme (two days, half-board with four treatments a day included). Alternatively, rooms are available from £104 per night and spa treatments can be chosen a la carte. Tel: 00 33 557 838383 or visit www.sources-caudalie.com.
