The blow-up suit that can save you a bypass

Heart patients who can barely walk are being given a new lease of life after using revolutionary pumps that help them return to everyday activities.

The pumps force blood back into their damaged hearts at increased pressure, which seems to trigger the growth of new blood vessels.

Doctors using the system at West London's Hammersmith Hospital claim it has produced results 'almost too good to be true', with patients being able to walk to the shops and climb stairs for the first time in years.

They are giving the treatment to angina patients who, despite having surgery and drugs, find their condition is worsening.

Symptoms of chest pain on exertion, breath-lessness and poor circulation prevent them leading an active life and many are housebound.

The new system, called the Enhanced External Counterpulsation (EECP) machine, uses a series of inflatable pads attached to a patient's legs to force blood back to the heart.

The blood is squeezed in an electronically controlled sequence to improve circulation and provide a better supply of oxygen-rich blood to the heart.

Doctors say that after seven weeks of treatment 12 of the first 15 patients have reported lasting improvements.

The £100,000 EECP machine is manufactured in the U.S., where a register shows 5,000 patients have been treated so far. It is now available in Britain at the Hammersmith Hospital and a centre in Hull.

John Fretwell, 65, was able to take the station steps two at a time after the first few treatments at the Hammersmith Hospital and get relief from crushing chest pains that had put his life on hold.

Mr Fretwell, a retired computer manager from Hornchurch, Essex, said: 'On bad days before the treatment I had to give up walking. I enjoyed dancing but afterwards it felt like I was killing myself.

'Angina causes a terrific pain in your chest, neck and arms, and it gives you a bad headache. You just feel you almost cannot breathe and think before you do things.'

His angina started causing problems six years ago but it took until December 1998 before he had an angiogram that showed blockages in four coronary arteries.

While on the waiting list for surgery, Mr Fretwell decided to make his own inquiries about alternative treatment after reading about the 'amazing success' of the machine in the U.S.

He used his computer to track down information. He said: 'I found out they wanted volunteers at the Hammersmith and started the treatment last September.

'It feels like steel bands around your legs. It's bearable, but I can't say it's a pleasant sensation.'

He noticed a difference after three or four weeks. 'I was thrilled,' he said. 'I was breathing much better and really felt my heart had strengthened. It was a vast improvement.'

Consultant cardiologist Dr Peder Bagger and Professor Roger Hall from the Hammersmith Hospital and Imperial College School of Medicine, have pioneered the introduction of the EECP.

Dr Bagger said: 'This treats end-stage angina patients where they are on maximum medication and you can do nothing else for them.

'Before we started, I did not know if I believed it because it sounded too good to be true. But it really is beneficial, with about 70 per cent of patients having a positive effect even after six months.

'We had one patient who was not even able to shower himself and had not been out of his house for several years. Now he can walk to the shops.'

Side-effects are rare and mainly caused by thin skin becoming damaged, which means that patients with leg ulcers, for example, cannot be considered.

Dr Bagger added: 'More and more people are surviving heart attacks and living with circulatory disorders but they suffer pain and disability as a result. This is a non-invasive way of improving their quality of life for them.'

Mr Fretwell finally had surgery in March after an 18-month wait. He said: 'I had a quadruple bypass on medical advice but the treatment I had on the EECP machine made all the difference to my recovery.

'I left hospital after just six days and I believe I was in much better condition to have the operation and get over it.'

• Volunteers for the treatment are asked to ring 020 8383 2121 and ask for Denise Nesdale.
