'Vitamins could raise pregnancy risk'

Large doses of vitamins could raise the risk of pre-eclampsia in pregnant women rather than protect against it, research suggests.

Up to 25,000 British women are affected by pre-eclampsia every year, which causes blood pressure to rise to dangerous levels. It kills dozens of babies and means many more are stillborn.

A nationwide study has found that mothers-to-be at high risk of the potentially-fatal condition should not take large doses of vitamin C and E.

The condition has been linked to the production of toxic molecules called free radicals by the placenta.

A previous small-scale study suggested that anti-oxidants, such as vitamins C and E, could counter the problem. However, the latest study by Tommy's baby charity found the reverse appeared to be true.

Some 2,400 expectant mothers with high blood pressure, kidney problems, clotting disorders or diabetes were given either extra vitamin supplements or a placebo.

The team discovered that pre-eclampsia appeared about a week earlier among those who received the vitamins, and they were also 15 per cent more likely to deliver low birthweight babies.

Lead researcher Professor Shennan stressed there was no evidence that taking pregnancy-specific multivitamin preparations would produce the same results.

"In addition, folic acid was not a vitamin used in this trial and still should be taken as it is recommended in the UK prior to conception and in early pregnancy to reduce the risk of spina bifida," he said. The study, funded by the Wellcome Trust, was published online by the Lancet medical journal.
