Baby born to mum with two wombs

When Katherine Harrison collapsed with severe stomach pains just a week before she was due to give birth, doctors at first couldn't detect the cause.

But as they carried out an emergency Caesarean section they found she had two wombs. Her baby had been growing in one of them, which was half the size of a normal womb.

But it had ruptured because it was too small, leaving her son Cai fighting for his life.

Unable to breathe

The baby was resting on Mrs Harrison's stomach and was unable to breathe.

"I was absolutely terrified by the turn of events," said the 28-year-old mother.

"I was bleeding and the baby's heartbeat was dropping, but Cai kicked his way out.

"I'm just so glad I was in hospital when it all happened. If I'd had been at home, Cai would have died within five minutes and then probably me.

"We can't believe how lucky we all are."

The drama unfolded after a routine examination by Mrs Harrison's GP revealed she had excess sugar in her urine.

She was referred to Huddersfield Infirmary in West Yorkshire as high sugar levels can be a symptom of gestational diabetes, which can affect the health of both mother and baby.

Emergency Caesarean

But moments after she had been examined, Mrs Harrison began to suffer acute pains. Doctors then carried out the emergency Caesarean during which they discovered Mrs Harrison had two wombs and her baby had developed naturally in one of them.

Because the womb had ruptured, the child had been left lying lying in her stomach unable to breathe as the placenta had separated from the uterus, cutting off his oxygen supply.

The baby's heartbeat was fading but doctors worked quickly, managing to save the lives of both mother and child.

"I thought all the staff were absolutely fantastic," said Mrs Harrison, a pathologist at Bradford Royal Infirmary.

"They didn't panic when I was awake and then, apparently, when I was asleep all hell broke loose." Cai, who weighed 7lb 6oz, was placed in an incubator and monitored for the next two days.

Mrs Harrison's husband David, 27, an insurance actuary, said: "The doctors had never seen it before.

"As soon as they opened her stomach, the baby was just there unable to breathe.

"The doctors were just shouting at each other trying to save them both.

'Minutes to spare'

"I thought they were both going to die. If it had been another five minutes, they would have gone."

Four days after the dramatic birth, mother and son returned to their home in Huddersfield and have now both recovered from the ordeal.

Martin de Bono, consultant obstetrician and gynaecologist at the hospital, said the condition - known as bicornuate uterus - was 'extremely rare'.

The couple have been told the condition will not prevent them from having more children because Mrs Harrison has been left with one womb following surgery.

But her husband said the couple had no immediate plans to expand their family.

"We haven't really looked at that just yet. I think Cai will be more than a handful," he said.

He added: "We had been trying for a baby but we didn't know Katherine had two wombs. It's rare for a woman in that situation to get pregnant and even rarer to go full term and be able to give birth.

"It's funny because in hindsight we always thought Katherine's bump was a bit one-sided. We are just so thankful."
