Diagnosis ;; Sub-arachnoid haemorrhage

Sub-arachnoid haemorrhage - a sudden leak of blood over the surface of the brain, affects 8,500 people each year in Britain with more than 50 per cent occurring between the ages of 18 and 26. Peter Hamlyn, consultant neurosurgeon at the Royal London Hospital NHS Trust, says:

In 75 per cent of haemorrhage cases there is a weakness in the wall of a blood vessel supplying blood to the brain which creates a balloon-like swelling called an aneurysm.

A haemorrhage occurs when blood pressure builds up, causing the aneurysm wall to tear.

Key symptoms are sudden, severe headache at the back of the head followed by vomiting. It is important that surgery is performed to stop the bleeding.

Complete recovery is possible and common, although sometimes damage to the brain tissue may cause speech disturbance, weakness down one side or affect memory.

But these problems are not always permanent and may continue to improve.

Unfortunately, Bob's problem is permanent, but what a fantastic inspiration he is to us all. Further information is available from the British Brain & Spine Foundation, www.brainandspine.org.uk
