A drug used to treat epilepsy is now providing welcome relief to migraine sufferers - stopping migraines before they start.
The drug, Topamax, can be prescribed to patients who suffer moderate to severe migraines. Trials show that it can help reduce the frequency of attacks by as much as half.
Topamax is not intended to be used at the time of an attack, but is taken daily as a preventative. Levels of the drug build up in sufferers' systems, and reduce the chance of an attack Topamax is an anti-convulsant.

These drugs are believed to work in part by enhancing the actions of a natural brain neurotransmitter, GABA (gammaaminobutyric acid), a chemical that carries messages between nerve cells.
Imbalances of GABA are thought to be one of the causes of a migraine attack.
The drug also has an effect on calcium levels which, if they fall low, can trigger a migraine.
Around three to four million people in the UK suffer from migraines. The Migraine Action Association estimates that time off due to migraines costs businesses as much as £750 million in lost production every year.
"The reason why Topamax works so well for migraines is because there appears to be a link between the chemical pathways in the brain involved in epilepsy and those that cause migraines," says Dr Brendan Davies, a neurologist at North Staffordshire Hospital.
"In both conditions there is an overexcitement and imbalance of brain chemicals that leads to patients experiencing symptoms.
"We generally reserve Topamax for people who have several migraine attacks a week. These are the patients who find that their lives are terribly disrupted.
"They live with the knowledge that every few days they are going to have an attack, which can make life pretty miserable."
