Is modern medicine just what the doctor ordered?
There is still no effective cure for the common cold, but there are a range of treatments available. So should you rely on modern medicine or mothers' myths? Find out here:
Probiotic multivitamin
A probiotic with a multivitamin supplement called Multibionta has been clinically proven to fight colds. Research presented at the European Influenza Conference found it could shorten the length of a cold and produce a 25 per cent reduction in symptoms.
Probiotics may boost defence cells in the immune system.
Few strains can survive stomach acid, but the Seven Seas tablet has a protective coating, so the bacteria reach the gut where they colonise and crowd out the bad bacteria.
Vicks first defence
Hailed as a pioneering proactive nasal spray, this aims to attack respiratory viruses before they actually take hold.
It is a micro gel nasal spray that contains no drugs, but sprays gel on to the back of the nasal passage where the cold virus could otherwise take hold, trapping it so it that it cannot attach itself to other cells in the body.
The gel's low pH level also inactivates the virus and triggers the body to create mucus which flushes out the trapped, disarmed virus.
It is most effective when used within 24-36 hours of the virus entering the body, when sufferers feel the first warning signs of a cold such as a tickly sore throat.
It can also be taken when at risk of catching a cold or where germs can easily spread, such as in the office.
Envirocol
Research at the University of South Australia has shown that a daily dose of the natural dairy product colostrum could reduce the rate of colds and flu by up to 30 per cent.
Colostrum is the pre-milk substance produced by all species of mammal during the first few hours of lactation.
It is often referred to as nature's perfect food since it contains compounds to boost immunity and growth, as well as vitamins and minerals to promote health and fight infection.
Envirocol is based on colostrum from cows. The Australian study revealed that participants who took this daily were less susceptible to upper respiratory tract infections compared with those who were given a placebo.
