Take the stairs to beat obesity, workers told

Taking the stairs rather than the lift could help free the nation from its increasing obesity epidemic, sporting campaigners believe.

This week is Take the Stairs Week, part of Sport England's campaign to get people to make small changes to boost their activity levels.

Workers are being urged to ditch the lift or escalator to walk up the stairs in their office, at the station or in the shops.

While it may seem obvious, Sport England hopes that if people take small steps to take more exercise it may have a big difference to their health in the long-term.

Roger Draper, chief executive of Sport England, said: "Everyday Sport is all about small steps making a big difference and choosing to take the stairs instead of the lift is a great example of this. Making such a simple and practical change to our daily lives really can have a significant impact.

One of our key tasks at Sport England is to get the whole nation more active and this should help us start to shift things in the right direction."

Take the Stairs Weeks is part of the Everyday Sport Office Games, which runs until November 18.

Workers are being encouraged to take part in extra activities, such as cycling to work or taking part in a sport during their lunch break, to earn medals and prizes.

Earlier this month international heart expert Dr Dorian Dugmore warned that office workers were losing millions of hours of vital exercise due to the explosion of email.

Whereas staff were once forced to walk to colleagues' desks to pass on information, the email revolution now means much of this can be done in a tap of the computer keyboard.

But this has meant that crucial physical activity is lost, leading to the UK's population becoming even more inactive and unhealthy - and fuelling the obesity epidemic.

More information on the Everyday Sport campaign, supported by stars including model Nell McAndrew and rower James Cracknell, is available at www.everydaysport.com
