Do I have a hormone problem?

Thanks for your question. It would be unusual for a hormonal imbalance to be the sole cause of the unidentified vaginal discharge you describe.

Hormonal changes in the cycle can however make some discharges more common at certain times of the month - thrush and another infection known as bacterial vaginosis are two such ones that can be affected this way.

Bacterial vaginosis, or BV, usually causes a watery, grey-coloured discharge which has a fish-like odour. As with thrush, it is not sexually transmitted and can be treated effectively if the right antibiotic is used.

Long-term use of the pill might make thrush more common, or worsen a natural cervical discharge, known as leucorrhoea. If it truly does have a thrush-like appearance - often described as like cottage cheese - then it is most likely that it is thrush, but that it is not sensitive to the usual anti-fungal treatments.

If you have read any of my previous advice on this subject, you will know that I am a strong believer of attending a Sexual Health or Genitourinary medicine (GUM) clinic for dealing with this type of problem. They have much more advanced facilities for diagnosing and getting to the bottom of this type of troublesome discharge.

The doctor or nurse will have several extra tests available and will examine the discharge immediately under the microscope. Perhaps not the most pleasant job in the world, you might think, but definitely very effective! Blood tests are not likely to help and it doesn't sound like your thyroid has anything to do with it.
