Then there is an organisation that can help both of you called Al Anon and Alateen . Help line 020 7403 0888 10 am-10 pm every day over the Christmas period and www.al-anonuk.org.uk . Al Anon offers help and support to families including teenagers of problem drinkers.
They could help your mother see that alcoholism is a family disease and how living with someone else's drinking is too devastating for most people to bear alone. They will help her to become more detached which does not mean that she does not care but that she needs to recognise that she is not responsible for another person's illness or their recovery from it.
Watching someone you love destroy their lives, their relationships, their health and all the heartache this brings to you and your mother is understandably going to make her feel angry. At Al Anon she could talk to someone about all these feelings and how the death of her mother at a young age intensifies the grief she is now feeling.
Your grandfather will be receiving the care he needs in hospital he might get better but if he doesn't I know your mother will have done everything and more in trying to look after him. Please show her this letter and ask her to get help.
