Can olive oil help dry skin?
A lack of essential fatty acids in the diet can sometimes contribute to dry, roughened skin.
Olive oil supplies some essential fats, but it's largely made up of monounsaturated oils - good for heart health.
Whilst it may help skin softness to some degree, rapeseed, peanut, sunflower and oily fish are richer providers of essential fats that build flexibility and moisture resistance into skin cells.
Having at least one tablespoon of one of these oils every day (or a portion of oily fish, nuts or seeds), should help to maintain healthier skin whilst not supplying too many calories. You may also consider taking a supplement of evening primrose oil, together with fish oils if you do not eat oily fish regularly.
Remember though, there are many other causes for dry skin. including genetic makeup, not drinking enough fluids, being exposed to cold or dry conditions or perfumed cosmetics. Moisturising regularly will also help.
