Is the Metabolic typing diet better than others?

The theory of metabolic typing is that we all have a different biochemical make up (different sized organs, slightly different digestive secretions etc.) and that this means that we all need different diets.

Whilst I don't have a problem with the first concept, I'm not at all convinced anyone knows enough about how genetic differences affect our nutritional needs to safely recommend prescriptive diets - especially those that go against normal healthy eating guidelines.

Practitioners offering metabolic typing claim to look at your oxidative system (the rate at which you convert food into energy) and your autonomic nervous system, (the part of the nervous system that regulates the body's internal environment), along with body shape, body pH and so on.

But it can be a costly business and certainly isn't substantiated by mainstream science. I don't like to be negative about new theories - after all scientists once scoffed at the idea that the world was round - but as a way to lose weight I'd have to classify it as a fad.

At the moment the only safe way we know to lose weight is a balanced calorie-restricted diet - so everything in moderation - combined with adequate physical activity.

For long term minor health niggles that haven't responded to a normal healthy diet and lifestyle then I'd think metabolic typing was worth a try.

The Metabolic Typing Diet, by William L. Wolcott is a do-it-yourself version which includes a chapter of sample questions to help you determine your own metabolic type. Click here to buy a copy.

Recommended regimens according to your results are either low protein, low fat and low carbohydrate, or high-protein, high-fat and low-carbohydrate (or something in between).

However you shouldn't embark on any sort of high fat diet without your doctor's say so if you have a history of heart disease in your family - and remember any diet that cuts out foods you enjoy won't be sustainable in the long run.
