Can we cure our son's stammer?
The fact that your son's speech is fine most of the time is a good sign.
Stammering is a normal stage of speech development in many preschool children and rarely progresses to stammering in later life if it is ignored.
However in a child of your son's age stammering is more complicated. As he has found, it can cause considerable frustration, anxiety and will ultimately drain his self-confidence, especially if he is teased about it.
You have noticed one of the main things which makes your son's stammering worse is when he speaks to people in authority. This is a problem experienced by many stammerers.
Many of us feel self conscious when talking to someone in authority or when meeting new people. For someone who stammers such talking is especially difficult.
The reason is that feeling nervous tends to make most of us speak faster which will bring on stammering in someone at risk of it such as your son.
The first way you may be able to help your son is to suggest that he experiment with slowing down when he speaks and that he pauses for a moment before speaking.
Sometimes it helps to acknowledge that he has a problem with stammering, even when talking to strangers, as this can put them and your son at his ease.
As you commented, his friends at primary school knew he had a problem with stammering which made him feel more relaxed with them and so reduced his stammering.
Reassure your son that people do not judge him only on his speech and stammering but also on his body language, facial expressions and eye contact.
Hard as it may be to do to start with, encourage him to think about smiling and looking people in the eye, standing tall when he speaks and learning to give an air of self-confidence.
Not only does this help him give the right body language, it also gives him something other than his stammer to focus on when he is starting to speak.
Help him to build his self confidence in other areas by joining in activities or undertaking skills which seem daunting or difficult. Once he finds he can partake, even if he does not reach perfection of ultimate goals, he will feel less afraid about other challenges, including his speech.
Your son should seek help as it sounds as if he is worried and increasingly frustrated by his stammering. His GP can refer him to a speech therapist.
