Make Way For Puckster: The NHL Targets Kids

Long before licensed athletic apparel was a better-than $10 billion annual market, the business was built on a foundation of low-priced items aimed at children and sold through mass merchandisers. Now after the explosion, licensors are once again launching lines exclusively for children.
National Hockey League Enterprises, the marketing arm of the NHL, is the latest big-name licensor to lend its brand to a line of children's merchandise. Its 'Pucksters' line will begin appearing in mass merchandisers next Spring, with the big push set for the '94 back-to-school season.
'It's a way for the adults that originally bought into licensed apparel for themselves to extend their loyalties to their kids,' said Fred Scalera, vice president retail licensing, at NHL Enterprises. 'The cycle (to kids) has come around. We see it as a way to target a hot market.'
The kids population has been rising. There were 53 million kids under 14 in 1990. With mass merchandisers selling around 80% of infant, toddler and pre-school merchandise, it's also a way for the NHL to get more merchandise in a retail channel it desperately needs to court.
Thus far, the line has been supported with a trade campaign. Extensive POS merchandising is also planned.
Pucksters is the third branded line from NHL Enterprises, which has grown total retail sales of its licensed merchandise from $75 million during the 1888-89 season to an estimated $800 million this year.
'Pucksters should help us sell all of our children's apparel, because it lets the retailer know we are promoting NHL product,' Scalera said. Kid-targeted NHL licensed product currently represents about 15% of sales.
While Pucksters will begin as an apparel line, it will be extended to infant products. Ready for an NHL-branded pacifier or bottle? Eventually, toys and games will be added.
LICENSING THE FUTURE $62 Billion in licensing goods were sold in the U.S. and Canada last year, down 2.2%. Here's how it breaks out

Fancy Food & Beverage Expo Showcases German Imports

The German Pavilion at the National Association of Specialty Food Trade (NASFT) Fancy Food Show this week in New York is always a major attraction. The German Agricultural Marketing Board - CMA, North America, provides an opportunity to taste many beers, wines, canned and jarred fruits and vegetables, cheeses, coffees, health and dietetic foods, jams, jellies, pasta, potato products and teas.
Imported Kaserei Champignon Bella-Monte from Champignon North America, Englewood Cliffs, N.J., is a soft, creamy cheese with a refined blue mold and a sharp, spicy flavor. With a delicate, white crust on the outside, this can be considered a cross between a Blue and Brie.
A number of specialties are imported from Hengstenberg GmbH, Esslingen, Germany. The company, dating from 1876, makes Hengstenberg Pickles, Vinegars, Mustards and Sauerkrauts. A range of mustards in jars with historical scenes offer attractive, reusable containers.
More Americans are eating imported German confections. Chocolates, hard-caramels and gummy candies are the main imports.
A growing player in the imported confectionery market in the U.S., and already one of the major firms in Europe, is the Stollwerk group with a turnover of more than 1.2 billion DM. Part of the group since 1979, Sprangel in Hamburg is Germany's oldest chocolate brand, dating to 1851. Chocolate Gourmet Sticks in eight varieties are packaged in a square, flat box. The sticks include Dairy Milk Chocolate, Nut Milk, Plain Chocolate, White Milk Chocolate Mocca Cream. White and Milk Chocolate Bears, and Tiamo Marc de Champagne Truffles are three other boxed chocolates being introduced to the U.S. by International Niche Marketing, Morris Plains, N.J.
Germany produces more than 300 bread types and more than 1,000 different kinds of cakes. Whole-grain breads and other baked goods are being produced as part of a booming bakery industry in Germany. This includes crackers and cookies without sugar and with only a little salt. In 1990, Germany exported over $367 million in breads, cakes, cookies and crackers to us. That market is reportedly growing between 6%-8% a year.
Lisken-Batscheider offers several famous Crisp Breads and Knacker varieties. Crisp Bread selections include Sesame Whole Kernel, Delicatess Whole Kernel, High Fiber and Crunchy Piquant Whole Kernel in 7 oz. boxes. Sesame Wholemeal Sweetened, Sesame Wholemeal Tasty and a Pizza Wholemeal round out the new items in the Knackers line. They are available from Leiken USA in both Ridgefield, Wash., and Bethlehem, Pa.
Importer Carl Brandt, Stamford, Conn., offers a pair of new Party Rounds from Mestemacher, German breadmakers since 1871. A special slow baking process gives these a long shelf life. Made exclusively of whole grains and biologically natural sour dough, the 8.8 oz. pre-sliced rounds are in pumpernickel and rye.
Also newly offered are Brandt Lemon Cream Wafers in sleek green packaging, and Brandt Vanilla Cream in yellow packs. Each 4.4 oz. box has 24 servings, offered exclusively to specialty food shops.
There are presently over 100 brews available imported from Germany, with more on the way. Long known as 'liquid bread,' beer reigns as the most popular German food-product imported into North America. Within Germany itself, there are reportedly 4,000 plus brands offering the widest selection of styles and tastes. New non-alcoholic Alkoholfrei Beer from Holsten, Hamburg, has no artifical coloring or taste enhancers and is brewed according to the German purity law of 1516.
The CMA in New York issues a handy, pocket-size Foodservice Buyer's Guide 1993-1994: Foods and Beverages from Germany. The directory provides food-service managers, restaurateurs, chefs and caterers a resource for German food sources. A Buyer's Guide to Imported German Foods and Beverages, USA and Canada is another CMA publication.

Hiram Stirs Regional Promos

The company is reviewing $24 million in sales promo assignments, several sources said last week. At the same time, it's cutting ad budgets for at least two major brands, Canadian Club and Beefeater Gin.
'We may never have been right to do national promotions in the first place,' said Hugh O'Neill, HW's sr vp-marketing services. 'We need to get closer to folks in each market.'
Hiram Walker spent $25.4 million in 1992 media on 15 brands, reported LNA/Arbitron, including Kahlua ($6.4 million), Cutty Sark Scotch Whisky ($4.2 million), B&B ($3.6 million), Beefeater ($2.4 million) and Canadian Club ($1.9 million).
Overall market share for Hiram Walker brands is slipping, down to 6% last year from 6.3% of distilled spirits sales in 1991, according to Beverage Industry. Beefeater has a 5.9% share of gin sales; Canadian Club, with 1992 case sales reportedly down 1.3%, ranks No. 3 among Canadians with a 12.6% share.
Hiram Walker has talked to a dozen promotion and ad agencies and may split the promo assignment for 15-20 brands between two or three shops. Among brands under review are Kahlua, Courvoisier, Irish Mist and Midori, all handled by Flair Communications, Chicago, which also has Beefeater and Canadian Club. CME-KHBB, Minneapolis, has CC's ad account. Sources said Hiram Walker's in no hurry to name an ad agency for Beefeater, in review since February, although FCB/Leber Katz Partners, N.Y., is said to be a top contender.
