McInerney: Another Round
Henry McInerney's company, Tetley, actually tried to develop an extracting tool to get its round teabags out of the cup - until concluding that a spoon works as well. Now the round bag is rolling out, Lipton ads are taking potshots on the extraction issue, and Tetley parent Allied-Lyon is watching carefully to see whether the round bag, backed by $35 million in spending, will enjoy the same success in the U.S. that it has in Britain, Australia and Canada. McInerney, 52, who just moved up to managing director of beverages for all the Americas, admits the U.S. market poses a greater challenge than in Britain, where the round bag replaced a stringless square bag. For a distant follower to market leader Lipton, 'The status quo is an enemy,' he said. 'If it isn't broken, we'll fix it.'

ORGANIZATIONS: Nissan Heads Down Road To Lower Costs, Up Profits
The appointment of Thomas is viewed as a sign that Nissan's Japanese managers will keep a tighter grip on operations. Cuts of 10% to 20% of the U.S. corporate staff are said to be planned over the next two years. Numerous other personnel changes are to be announced today, including the appointment of Brad Bradshaw, Infiniti's ad manager, as head of advertising for both Nissan and Infiniti.
Mignanelli hit big last year with the Altima launch, which broadened the Japanese car company's reach beyond a performance car niche market. Thomas, who believes strongly in research, is expected to launch similarly aggressive marketing campaigns and model designs, but backed by more intricate research efforts that target the newly found broader market - beginning with a Maxima replacement in two or so years.
'You're going to see a lot more concrete planning based on analysis and less deviation from that planning in terms of product and in terms of marketing efforts and where things are advertised and to whom they are advertised,' said Art Spinella, director of automotive research at CNW Marketing Research, Brandon, Oregon. Mignanelli's departure was anticipated for months, as pressure mounted to lower costs and hike market share. A Nissan spokesman, though, said Mignanelli resigned to pursue 'other opportunities.'

ADVERTISING: Infiniti Dealers: The Time is Now
'From what I've heard and seen I'm going to this meeting with great anticipation,' said Jeff Klein, general manager of Infiniti of Falmouth, the only dealership in Maine.
The campaign will not feature Michael Douglas' voice. The rumored reason is Douglas' estimated $6 million fee. Instead, an unknown actor will highlight the Q45 luxury features as he walks around the new car. The flagship car has been restyled with leather and wood. A decrease in the amount spent on the creative is likely to be taken up by increased media spending. Dealers say Infiniti isn't in the public's face enough. Billings are about $110 million.
Infiniti also has ads ready for the G20, a car Consumer Reports rated a best buy. The new 1993 1/2 G20 is expected to be a strong seller for dealers because of its price tag - around $20,000 - and dual air bags, which are a big draw in this category. 'We're going to squash the rumor that luxury has to cost a lot,' Klein said.
Infiniti also is aggressively targeting the women's market this year. Self magazine has created a video to teach dealers how to sell to women as part of Infiniti's 'Women's Forum' program. 'We want to introduce Infiniti the car and Infiniti the company to women,' said Deborah Thayer, creative and media manager for Infiniti. 'Self is really the perfect demographic for the G20 and J30 buyer.' The program began three years ago but really took off this year, with 37 of Infiniti's 140 dealers participating.
