Patients Go Overseas For Less-Expensive Health Care Services

Article Date: 14 Dec 2006 - 12:00 PST
The Charlotte Observer on Sunday examined the growing trend of U.S. residents going abroad to countries such as India, Thailand and Costa Rica to seek medical services at significantly lower prices than in the U.S. While this trend traditionally is associated with the wealthy, increasing numbers of middle-income U.S. residents are "evading impoverishment" by traveling overseas for costly, medically necessary operations, Arnold Milstein, chief physician at Mercer Health & Benefits, wrote recently in the New England Journal of Medicine. Employers also are seeking ways to take advantage of the lower cost of medical care abroad for their workers.

Bonnie Grissom Blackley, benefits director at Blue Ridge Paper Products, in a recent Senate testimony about the rising cost of providing health care benefits to employees said, "Employers are angry, fed up and desperately seeking relief from a system that ranks 37th worldwide in quality of care but costs more per capita than other industrialized nations." Grissom Blackley added, "We do not get commensurate value for our health care dollar." Proponents of the practice note that there are about 100 foreign hospitals in six countries that are accredited by the international division of the same organization that accredits U.S. hospitals. Some critics express concern about the quality of care available at facilities outside the U.S. (Garloch, Charlotte Observer, 12/10).
