UK mulls folic acid in flour to cut birth defects

Last Updated: 2006-12-12 11:44:02 -0400 (Reuters Health)

LONDON - A key scientific committee in Britain gave guarded backing on Tuesday to the mandatory fortification of flour with the vitamin folic acid to reduce the number of neural tube defect-affected pregnancies.

The Scientific Advisory Committee of Nutrition (SACN) issued a report which recommended mandatory fortification as the most effective way to increase folate intake of women most at risk of neutral tube defects, a condition also known as spina bifida. The committee, also said that if mandatory fortification is introduced it must be accompanied by several other measures designed to ensure that folic acid consumption does not rise above recommended levels in the rest of the population.

It also sought "careful monitoring on the effects of long-term exposure to intakes of folic acid above guideline upper limit per day and postulated adverse effects including neurological damage, cardiovascular disease and cancer".

Britain's Food Standards Agency launched a public consultation on Tuesday to consider various options including mandatory fortification, encouraging the food industry to fortify more foods on a voluntary basis and to continue with the current policy of promoting folic acid supplements for women who are planning to start a family.

Mandatory fortification of flour with folic acid already takes place in several countries including the United States.

Merck says HDL drug not linked to heart problems

Last Updated: 2006-12-12 11:33:08 -0400 (Reuters Health)

NEW YORK - Merck & Co. on Tuesday said its experimental cholesterol drug MK-859 raised levels of "good" HDL cholesterol by more than 50 percent in clinical trials, without raising blood pressure or causing serious cardiovascular side effects.

The drug is a member of the same class of medicines as torcetrapib, Pfizer Inc.'s high-profile experimental medicine that was discontinued earlier this month after it was linked to elevated blood pressure and a worrisome number of deaths.

Merck also told analysts at a four-hour meeting that it had high hopes for an experimental drug, MK-364, which causes weight losses by the same mechanism of action as Sanofi-Aventis' Acomplia.

But Merck said its drug was associated with psychiatric side effects in clinical trials.
