Detecting 'Silent Killers': Preventive Screenings That Can Save Your Life

Article Date: 06 Dec 2006 - 0:00am (PST)
There are preventive tests available to help reduce the danger of stroke, which takes a life in the U.S. every 45 seconds, according to vascular surgeon Andrew Manganaro, MD, Medical Director of Life Line Screening.

Stroke screenings are sometimes sponsored by hospitals, or can be obtained through independent companies across the country such as Life Line Screening, the nation's leading provider of mobile stroke and vascular disease screenings. Register online at http://www.lifelinescreening.com (or call 877-237-1272).

"Stroke and vascular disease are pervasive in America and will become a larger problem as baby boomers age," Dr. Manganaro said. "If you are age 50 and older, or have a family history of vascular disease, speak to your physician about testing. Preventive screenings are the first line of defense in detecting conditions that can lead to stroke or sudden death."

Stroke strikes half of its victims without warning symptoms.

A fast, painless, inexpensive ultrasound test can detect blocked carotid arteries that cause most of the 700,000 strokes in the U.S. annually.

Trudi Clubb, a trim vegetarian from Maryland, was amazed to learn at a vascular health screening that she had severely blocked carotid arteries. She had no symptoms or family history of vascular disease. As a result, she was caught in a classic "Catch 22": insurance companies often don't pay for stroke and vascular disease screenings unless patients exhibit symptoms, but most have no symptoms -- until it's too late.

Pat Buls, an Iowa nurse, suspected her 63-year-old husband might have vascular problems because of his family history. His insurance company wouldn't pay for tests to determine if he was at risk for a stroke because he was asymptomatic, so his wife signed him up and accompanied him to a Life Line Screening. Pat's intuition was right. Her husband had severely blocked carotid arteries. He subsequently underwent surgery and now is monitored closely by his doctors.

"It's unfortunate that the healthcare system is 'backwards' with its focus on fixing problems rather than preventing them in the first place," Pat says.

In under an hour, non-invasive ultrasound tests detect four potential 'silent killers' -- carotid artery blockage, abdominal aortic aneurysm, peripheral artery disease and osteoporosis.
