NEW YORK (Reuters Health) - Having high levels of vitamin D is associated with a lower risk of developing multiple sclerosis (MS), according to a study published in this week's Journal of the American Medical Association.
Several lines of evidence have linked vitamin D levels with MS, Dr. Alberto Ascherio, an epidemiologist at the Harvard School of Public Health in Boston, and his associates note, "but evidence remains inconclusive."
To investigate further, Ascherio's group analyzed data from the Department of Defense Serum Repository, which stores blood samples from more than 7 million US military personnel. The investigators also searched other military databases to identify service personnel diagnosed with MS.

The investigators singled out the records of 174 patients who had at least one blood sample stored prior to the onset of MS symptoms and one afterwards. These were then paired to two unaffected "controls" from the Repository, matched by age, gender, race, dates of sample collection and branch of military service.
Among white subjects, the chances of having MS were 62 percent lower for those with the highest levels of vitamin D compared to those with the lowest levels.
Noting that "adolescence appears to be a crucial exposure period for MS," Ascherio's group examined the relationship between vitamin D and MS risk among personnel younger than 20 years old. Only 1 of 39 MS cases and 16 of 76 controls had high levels of vitamin D.
"Levels in late adolescence are likely to be important," the researchers say.
The team found they could not tie vitamin D levels to MS among black personnel, because they all had relatively low levels of the vitamin. In addition, the small number of Hispanics in the group prevented accurate analysis.
Even though these results suggest that increasing the vitamin D levels of young adults could protect against MS, the researchers do not recommend vitamin D supplementation for this purpose until it has been shown to work in clinical trials.
