Ultrasound Technique For Breast Cancer Detection Could Replace Biopsies
Article Date: 02 Dec 2006 - 8:00am (PST)

A new ultrasound technique is so good at helping a doctor determine whether a patient has breast cancer that it may eventually replace biopsies altogether, say researchers from Northeastern Ohio Universities College of Medicine, USA. The new research was presented at the Radiological Society of North America annual meeting, by Dr. Richard Barr, professor of radiology.

The ultrasound technique is called elastography or real-time, free hand elasticity imaging. In an experiment involving 59 patients, they found this technique helped researchers distinguish harmless lumps from harmful (malignant) ones in 100% of cases - in other words, the technique appears to be 100% accurate. The technique correctly identified 16 out of 16 cancerous tumors and 56 out of 56 benign ones.

A further, larger study is needed to confirm the findings of this study, say the researchers. If a larger study confirms this, the fear, stress and anxiety, cost, discomfort and pain, and waiting, by thousands of women who have to undergo biopsies, could be eliminated. In the USA alone, almost one million biopsies are performed annually on suspected breast cancer patients - in 80% of cases the lumps are harmless (benign, the person does not have breast cancer).

The cost savings would not only relate to the biopsy itself, which can by up to $900, but also the work-time lost by the patient. An elastography would probably cost around one to two hundred dollars and the results would be there and then, while-you-wait.

(A biopsy is when cells are taken from the breast. A scientists looks at them under a microscope to decide whether they are cancerous or not. They cells are taken out, either with a scalpel or a needle).

Elastography may have uses in helping prostate and thyroid cancer treatment, as well as diagnosing damage to the heart, say the researchers.

Elastography differs from traditional ultrasound in that it also gauges movement - it can distinguish between stiff and soft tissue (soft tissue looks lighter while hard tissue looks darker).

Volunteers Required For Whiplash Injury Research

UQ's Physiotherapy Division is asking people to don a special vest to improve understanding of the impact of whiplash on the daily life of people with chronic symptoms.

Dr Michele Sterling, a world-leading researcher in the Division's Whiplash Research Unit, said current research indicated that many people with neck pain after a motor-vehicle accident recovered within weeks.

However, some people experienced persistent neck pain over months or even years.

"Little is actually known about how the whiplash condition impacts on the ability to engage in normal work, rest and play that most of us take for granted," she said.

The current study uses novel technology to examine daily life at a level rarely seen in clinical research.

The Lifeshirt is a lightweight lycra vest that is hidden beneath a participant`s usual clothes. The vest unobtrusively monitors participant`s physiological parameters (such as heart-rate and respiration), posture, and movement patterns. Participants are asked to wear the vest for one day.

During the same day they will be asked to make entries in an "electronic diary", to describe factors such as pain levels, symptoms, and activities.

"Our hope is that this research will paint a picture of daily life with long-term whiplash, and shed light on factors that may contribute to the persistent nature of these kinds of injuries", says Dr Sterling.

Participants must have neck pain, as a result of a motor vehicle accident which occurred more than 3 months and less than 5 years ago.

They must be between 18 and 65 years of age and able to attend the Neck Pain and Whiplash Research Unit at the University`s St Lucia campus for a two-hour testing session. All participants must be able to wear the Lifeshirt for one day (either at home or work).

A range of physical tests examining neck function will be conducted during the clinic appointment. Participants will also be asked to complete a series of questionnaires to assess pain, symptoms, and the physical, social, and emotional consequences of their injury.

The study has been approved by the Human Research Ethics Committee of the University of Queensland.

Potential participants should contact the Neck Pain and Whiplash Research Unit on (07) 3365 4529.

Program To Freeze Women's Ovaries To Preserve Fertility After Cancer

The Center for Reproductive Research at Northwestern University is launching a new, experimental research program for young women who may be at risk to lose their ovarian function and fertility following treatment for cancer.

The program, in which a woman's ovary is removed and frozen for possible future use, is being led by Teresa Woodruff, Ph.D., associate director of the Robert H. Lurie Comprehensive Cancer Center of Northwestern University and executive director of the Institute for Women's Health Research at Northwestern's Feinberg School of Medicine. The long-term goal of the program is to be able to extract and mature eggs from cryopreserved (frozen) ovarian tissues to initiate pregnancies once cancer treatment has been completed.

"This breakthrough may permit not only the potential preservation of fertility options for women and girls with cancer, but also can be applied to normal in vitro fertilization patients. This procedure, when developed, could radically change the way infertility is viewed, reduce and eliminate embryo storage and provide better options for women who do not respond to hormonal therapy, " said Woodruff.

In recognition of the Cancer Center's commitment to providing fertility options to women and men with cancer, it has been recognized as a Fertile Hope Center of Excellence, the fifth medical center in the country to receive this designation. Fertile Hope is a non-profit organization that assists cancer patients faced with infertility.

Woodruff's research involves developing new techniques for the long- term preservation of human ovarian tissue. Scientists are exploring ways to remove immature eggs from this tissue and to mature them in the laboratory so that they can potentially be fertilized at a later date.

At this time, the only pregnancies resulting from this research are in mice. Eligible participants will have one ovary surgically removed at Northwestern Memorial Hospital in an outpatient procedure called a laparoscopy before starting cancer treatment. Eighty percent of the ovary will be preserved for the patient's future use and 20 percent will be used by researchers to explore ways to extract and develop immature eggs.

Scientists and physicians from Northwestern are developing a new discipline described as oncofertility and are organizing a collaboration of national experts that include biophysicists, biomaterials biologists, clinical oncologists, reproductive biologists, psychologists, ethicists and legal scholars. The objectives of oncofertility are to better understand the impact of cancer treatment on fertility, to identify new technologies to preserve fertility and to explore the psychosocial role fertility has on survivorship.
