One pre-surgery antibiotic dose recommended: study

Last Updated: 2006-11-21 13:25:26 -0400 (Reuters Health)

CHICAGO - One dose of an antibiotic just before surgery is as good as several spread over 24 hours to fight infections at the operation site, saving money and easing fears about bacterial resistance, a study said on Monday.

While guidelines in recent years have promoted the one-dose concept as the most effective, many surgeons have continued to use a broader approach, said the report from Hospital Sao Francisco, in Ribeirao Preto, Brazil.Doctors there said they examined infection rates for more than 12,000 patients who had surgery in 2002 and 2003, roughly half of them after a one-dose protocol using a narrow-spectrum antibiotic was begun. The one-dose method "did not lead to an increase in rates of surgical site infection," said the report published in the Archives of Surgery.

"In this era of restricted hospital budgets and increased bacterial resistance, one-dose prophylaxis may provide a way to improve performance by lowering costs," the study said. Overuse of antibiotics can lead to the emergence of bacteria which are resistant to the drugs designed to kill them.

"An appealing argument for decreasing antibiotic usage may involve cost," the study added. "There are publications in the literature showing substantial savings with less antibiotic usage."

Mattel to recall Polly Pocket play sets

Last Updated: 2006-11-21 12:45:26 -0400 (Reuters Health)

NEW YORK - Toymaker Mattel Inc. will recall about 2.4 million Polly Pocket doll and accessory sets after three children were reported to be injured when they swallowed magnets from the sets, the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission said on Tuesday.

All three suffered intestinal perforations that required surgery, the commission said.

The El Segundo, California-based Mattel could not immediately be reached for comment on the recall.

The commission said the play sets were sold at discount department stores and toy stores from May 2003 through September 2006 for between $15 and $30.

It said tiny magnets inside the dolls and accessories can fall out, and the commission is aware of 170 reports of the small magnets coming out of the recalled toys.

The commission said that Polly Pocket magnetic play sets currently on store shelves are not included in the recall.

Consumers should contact Mattel to arrange for the return of the sets and to receive a voucher for a replacement toy of the customer's choice, up to the value of the returned product, the commission said.
