Exercise Program For Older Individuals With CKD To Be Tested By Rutgers College Of Nursing Professor

Article Date: 22 Nov 2006 - 2:00am (PST)
The National Institute of Nursing Research at the National Institutes of Health awarded a two-year $154,000 grant to a Rutgers College of Nursing faculty member to test the effects of a 12-week home-based exercise intervention program on older adults with chronic kidney disease (CKD) requiring long-term dialysis treatments. The study will also evaluate the feasibility of the research plan for a larger clinical trial.

"Physical functioning is a major problem for individuals with chronic kidney disease and has a devastating impact on older adults with this condition," said Charlotte Thomas-Hawkins, assistant professor at the College of Nursing at Rutgers, The State University of New Jersey. "Older individuals with CKD have not been targeted for inclusion in most physical activity intervention studies."

Sixty men and women from six New Jersey-based hemodialysis facilities will be recruited for the study. Research assistants will ask these participants, 60 years old and older, such questions as their level of physical activity and their confidence in their ability to exercise.

Article continues below and (thank you)

"Participants will be trained to perform low to moderate intensity exercise," said Thomas-Hawkins, a Burlington, N.J. resident. "For example, walking will be the exercise of choice to increase their cardiovascular fitness. They will also be trained to do chair exercises, use therabands, and other low-intensity exercise to increase their muscle strength and flexibility. This study will help determine if the research plan and study procedures are feasible for a larger, randomized controlled trial."

From its headquarters at Rutgers Newark, Rutgers College of Nursing offers a broad range of academic programs on all three Rutgers campuses. The college offers a master's program with unique practitioner specialties and the first to offer a doctoral (Ph.D) nursing degree in New Jersey.

USA Today Series Examines Issues With Cancer Care

USA Today on Monday published several articles as part of a series titled "Surviving Cancer" based on the results of a survey conducted by the newspaper, the Kaiser Family Foundation and the Harvard School of Public Health. The survey included a nationally representative sample of 930 adults ages 18 years and older who say they, or another family member in their household, have been diagnosed with or treated for cancer in the past five years. Summaries appear below.
  • "Cancer Care Keeps in Step: Patient Advocates Can Choreograph Complex Treatment": Half of cancer patients and their households have problems with the coordination of cancer care, according to the survey. The survey found that 20% of cancer patients experienced confusion about their prescriptions, 21% received duplicate tests and 25% received conflicting information about their conditions (Szabo [1], USA Today, 11/20).

  • "Cancer Hurts Caregivers, Too: Stress of Helping Loved One Takes a Psychological Toll": About 32% of cancer patients said that their disease caused individuals in their households to have emotional or psychological problems, according to the survey (Szabo [2], USA Today, 11/20).

  • "Cancer Patients Keep on Working: Many Find Comfort, Support at Office": More than 40% of adults who live with cancer patients said that the patients were diagnosed during employment, and 75% said that the patients were treated well by their employers, according to the survey. Only 7% of adults who live with cancer patients said that the cancer patients were not treated well by their employers, the study found. However, almost 40% of adults who live with cancer patients said that the disease affected patients' ability to work (Armour, USA Today, 11/20).
Full results from the survey, which provides an in-depth examination of how families cope with cancer and highlights problems of health insurance and health care costs through the lens of those who have experienced this major illness, are available online.
