Interest Rate Roundup

Here's a look at the state of interest rates on five common consumer banking products and the latest rates from Bankrate.com's weekly national survey of large banks and thrifts conducted Nov. 22, 2006.

Article continues below and (thank you)

Mortgages
Rate: 6.22 percent (30-year fixed) Average points: 0.3
Mortgage rates fell an almost imperceptible amount and have gone down four consecutive weeks. The economic news of the week had to do with home resales -- the number of units sold was down by one-eighth in the third quarter compared to the same quarter a year earlier, and the median house resale price fell 1.2 percent. That was the first quarterly decline in median house prices in more than 13 years. The news about house resales reinforced the latest dreadful report about home construction, which noted that housing starts fell 27.4 percent from October 2005 to October 2006. The housing slump retards economic growth, which slows inflation, which depresses interest rates. The average 30-year fixed fell to 6.22 percent from 6.24 percent. The average 15-year fixed, which is a popular option for refinancing, fell 2 basis points, to 5.96 percent. A basis point is one-hundredth of a percentage point. On bigger loans, the average jumbo 30-year fixed fell to 6.45 percent from 6.47 percent. Adjustable-rate mortgages were split. The popular 5/1 ARM fell 2 basis points, to 6.11 percent, while the one-year ARM remained unchanged at 5.87 percent.

Home equity products
Rates: 8.23 percent (line of credit); 7.95 percent (loan)
Home equity products were unchanged. The average home equity line of credit stayed at 8.23 percent, and fixed-rate home equity loans sat still at 7.95 percent.
..............................................................

Auto loans
Rates: 7.83 percent (60-month, new car); 8.72 percent (36-month, used car)
The average interest rate on the 36-month used-car loan dipped 0.03 percent this week, to 8.72 percent, while all other types of loans remained the same as last week. The 60-month new-car loan is at 7.83 percent, 48-month at 7.79 percent and the 36-month at 7.73 percent. If one of your holiday gifts will be a car, General Motors and Ford have special sales for you. Ford's "Year-End Event" offers up to $3,000 discounts on some 2007 trucks, crossover vehicles and passenger cars. The program runs through Jan. 2, 2007. GM's "Red Tag" sale offers discounts up to $2,000 off many 2006 and 2007 models from Buick, Chevrolet, GMC, Pontiac and Saturn. GM's sale also runs through Jan. 2.

Certificates of deposit
Yields: 3.81 percent (1-year CD yield); 4.09 percent (5-year CD yield)
The Grinch may be arriving early. Most maturities saw a decline in yield this week and there's no reason to think that situation will reverse course soon. Drops shouldn't be severe, but the CD landscape has definitely changed. The average one-year CD yield lost 2 basis points to come in at 3.81 percent. The average five-year now stands at 4.09 percent, down 3 basis points, and the six-month is at 3.59 percent with this week's loss of 1 basis point. Jumbos fared a little better with both the one-year and the five-year shedding a basis point to 4.26 percent and 4.35 percent, respectively. The six-month jumbo rose a basis point to 4.09 percent.
..............................................................
Credit cards
Rates: 13.16 percent (standard fixed); 14.79 percent (standard variable)
The song remains the same this week, as there were no changes in the average interest rates on credit cards. The standard variable card remains at 14.79 percent and the standard fixed card is at 13.16 percent. For all cards -- standard, gold and platinum -- the fixed rate remains at 11.79 percent, and the variable rate remains at 13.92 percent. This week Experian, the credit score company, issued its National Score Index study, which showed that consumers are obtaining fewer credit cards. Since 2001, the percentage of new accounts opened has declined 19.6 percent. The percentage of consumers who are more than 90 days late on their card payments has also declined, to 11.9 percent. But all the news isn't rosy: The national average credit score is 675, down seven points from 2001. You can estimate your credit score using the FICO estimator tool on Bankrate.com.
