US wants Bonds' doctor to testify in steroid case

Last Updated: 2007-12-20 17:01:17 -0400 (Reuters Health)

SAN FRANCISCO - The U.S. government said on Thursday it is likely to call the personal physician of baseball home run king Barry Bonds to testify in his trial on charges of lying about steroid use.

Federal prosecutors indicted the seven-time National League Most Valuable Player last month on charges Bonds lied when he told a federal grand jury investigating the BALCO lab he had never knowingly used performance-enhancing drugs.

The government has revealed few clues about its evidence against the controversial Major League Baseball star, but in a court filing on Thursday it said it was likely to call Arthur Ting, a sports surgeon who treated Bonds for past knee injuries, to the witness stand.

"Dr. Ting is likely to be a witness for the government at trial," prosecutors said in a motion to the U.S. District Court for Northern California.

The earlier BALCO steroid probe led to imprisonment for Bonds' personal trainer, Greg Anderson, as well the head of BALCO, the laboratory south of San Francisco where Bonds had occasionally undergone blood and urine testing.

Anderson has long said he would not testify and served much of 2007 in prison in contempt of court on the issue.

Kimberly Bell, a former romantic partner of the slugger, is also expected to testify he once spoke to her of using steroids.

In an initial court appearance earlier this month, Bonds pleaded not guilty.

"Despite the charges that have been filed against me, I still have confidence in the judicial system and especially in the judgment of the citizens who will decide this case," he wrote on his Web page. "And I know that when all of this is over, I will be vindicated because I am innocent."

The U.S. filing on Thursday said two of Bonds' lawyers had potential conflicts of interest in the case.
