Dietary supplement may improve your golf game

Last Updated: 2007-12-14 13:21:57 -0400 (Reuters Health)

NEW YORK (Reuters Health) - The dietary supplement phosphatidylserine may help golfers hit the ball better and feel less stressed when they tee off, according to a study.

Phosphatidylserine is a component of cell membranes, and there is evidence that it can help the body bounce back better from intense physical activity and also reduce mental stress.

Dr. Holger Herwegen of the University of Paderborn in Germany and colleagues sought to determine whether supplementation with the substance would be beneficial in golf, a sport requiring "high levels of concentration and coordination."

To investigate, they evaluated the performance of 20 golfers, whose handicaps ranged from 15 to 40, before and after taking 200 milligrams of the supplement daily in nutritional bar form or a placebo for 42 days.

Before taking the supplement, the golfers averaged 8.3 "good ball flights" out of 20 tee-offs aiming at a green 135 meters away, while they rated their stress levels at 5.8.

After six weeks of supplementation, they averaged 10.1 good flights while their stress levels were 4.0. While the change in stress levels wasn't statistically significant, the increase in good ball flights was.

Golfers taking the inactive placebo showed no improvement in ball flights and no change in their stress levels.

The findings suggest that the supplement helped blunt the golfers' response to stress, thus improving their performance, Herwegen and colleagues conclude in the Journal of the International Society of Sports Nutrition.

More research, they say, is needed to understand the mechanism by which phosphatidylserine might exert these effects.

Publication of the study was funded by dietary supplement maker Chemi Nutra, of White Bear Lake, Minnesota.
