Living kidney donors enjoy good health long term

Last Updated: 2007-12-14 11:45:56 -0400 (Reuters Health)

NEW YORK (Reuters Health) - Living kidney donors experience generally good long-term health with minimal side effects after surgery to remove a kidney, according to a report published this month.

Dr. Amgad E. El-Agroudy and colleagues from Mansoura University in Egypt assessed the long-term health status of 1400 kidney transplant donors evaluated at their center between 1976 and 2002.

Although a significant fraction of kidney donors developed high blood pressure (hypertension) during follow-up, the incidence of hypertension at last follow-up in men (17.8 percent) and women (24.7 percent) was lower than that in the Egyptian general population (25.7 percent and 26.9 percent, respectively).

The incidence of diabetes (6.8 percent) and cardiovascular morbidities (3.2 percent) among kidney donors was significantly lower than that in the general population (9.3 percent and 6.2 percent, respectively), the report indicates.

"Living kidney donation is a safe procedure with a minimal complication rate in the long-term follow-up," the investigators conclude. Overall, renal function is well maintained after removal of a kidney for donation, "and in a living-related transplant setting, donor satisfaction is consistent."
