Health Tip: Step on Something Sharp?

(HealthDayNews) -- If you step on a nail or broken glass, it may not be a good idea to pull out the embedded object, advises St. John Ambulance. This may cause more damage and bleeding.

Instead:

  • Place a clean, preferably sterile, dressing around the object.
  • Build up paddings around it so it doesn't move.
  • Secure the paddings with a narrow bandage.
  • Get medical help from a nearby clinic or emergency room.

Orthodontic Treatment? Relax...

A naturally occurring hormone called recombinant human relaxin may be able to cut orthodontic treatment time in half by biochemically moving teeth faster and with less pain, researchers report.

Relaxin is already used to help women's pelvic ligaments stretch in preparation for birth. The hormone softens collagen and elastin in the tissues, relaxing strong cord-like fibers.

Researchers at the University of Florida in Gainesville are studying the use of relaxin to accelerate tooth movement and to prevent the migration of teeth back to their original positions after braces have been removed.

"You can imagine normal collagen and elastin fibers to be like rubber bands that attach to the tooth and hold it in place," study investigator Timothy Wheeler, professor and chairman of orthodontics at UF's College of Dentistry, explained in a prepared statement.

"Those tissue fibers resist the force of the orthodontic treatment applied to move the tooth, and, when that force is removed, say when the braces are taken off, the elasticity of the tissues springs the tooth back into position," Wheeler said.

He and his colleagues will study whether injecting relaxin into the gums will loosen collagen and elastin fibers and improve the movement of teeth during orthodontic treatment. They'll administer another injection of relaxin after the teeth have been moved to determine if the hormone will help prevent teeth from going back to their original position.

This is the first study to test relaxin as an orthodontic therapy, the researchers said.

Health Tip: Heed These Travel Safety Precautions

(HealthDayNews) -- Women who travel alone should take certain safety precautions, advises the American Automobile Association.

Here are some pointers:

  • Take a doorstop in your luggage and jam it under your closed hotel room door when you retire for the night.
  • Avoid ground level hotel rooms. Concierge floors often offer extra security.
  • Keep a business card from your hotel in your purse, in case you get lost.
  • If you're traveling in segregated areas, such as orthodox religious neighborhoods, take cues from the women around you and try to blend in.
  • Don't leave your drink unattended in a restaurant or bar.
  • Have phone numbers and know the location of places such as the U.S. embassy and the police.
  • When registering, use only your last name and first initial, if possible.

Death a Little Easier on the Rich

Money may not buy happiness, but it might make dying less troublesome.

Elderly Americans with more money are less likely than their poorer counterparts to suffer pain at the end of their lives, according to a University of Michigan study to be published in the August issue of the Journal of Palliative Care.

Compared with the less affluent, wealthier old Americans "may have greater access to goods and services above and beyond what insurance provides, and to social support from family and friends," study author and University of Michigan research scientist Maria Silveira said in a prepared statement. "They may also reside in settings with better quality of care."

The study of more than 2,600 men and women aged 70 and older found that those with a net worth of $70,000 or more were 30 percent less likely than poorer people to have frequently suffered pain during their final year of life.

This difference held true even after the researchers adjusted for age, gender, ethnicity, education and medical diagnosis.

Elderly people with more money also suffered fewer symptoms overall. Those in the wealthiest half were less likely to suffer depression and shortness of breath.

However, both rich and poor elderly people suffered more than expected in their last year of life, the study authors said.

"Regardless of wealth, older Americans carry an unacceptable burden of suffering in their last year of life," Silveira said.

"The older adults we studied who lived in the community suffered as much in their last year of life as do younger people who are severely ill and hospitalized," she said.
