How to keep staph at bay

Special to The Seattle Times

Q: I keep getting staph infections and my dermatologist keeps giving me antibiotics. Do you know how I can prevent them?

A: "Staphylococcus" is a genus of bacteria that includes many different species. But when people refer to a "staph infection," they are often talking about a skin infection that results from a certain bacterium known as Staphylococcus aureus.

The types of infections vary widely, from abscesses to red, inflamed patches of skin. Some of these bacteria are resistant to antibiotics, which can make the infections harder to treat. For instance, methicillin-resistant staph — also known as MRSA — used to be mostly a problem in hospitals, but now it is getting more common in the community. So if you are getting recurrent infections, it is worthwhile to have a culture done before you start antibiotics to see what the resistance pattern of the bacteria is. That way you can make sure that the right antibiotic is being used, and also make sure that you don't have MRSA — which can change the approach you take.

One place that staph likes to "hide" is inside the nostrils. So, if you are getting a lot of infections, talk to your doctor about doing a nose culture. If it shows staph, then some people find it helps to use a prescription ointment known as mupirocin in the nostrils twice a day for five days to try to get rid of the bacteria there.

Also, I recommend washing your hands regularly, avoiding sharing your towels or personal items like razor blades, and laundering all your clothing, bedding and towels in hot water.

From a holistic point of view, there are many options. Some people have found that a specific garlic product known as AlliMAX has been helpful for them. Fresh garlic is active against staph in lab studies, at least partly due to a chemical known as allicin. AlliMAX has a high amount of allicin. One downside, though, is that it is smelly — as you would expect garlic to be.
