Newer Immigrants to U.S. Feel Healthier

NEW YORK (AP) -- Coming to the United States apparently can be hard on your health.

Foreign-born adults who have been in the country longer were more likely than newer arrivals to say they weren't in great health, according to a report from the city Department of Health and Mental Hygiene.

"The Health of Immigrants in New York City" - the first report of its kind from the department - was scheduled to be released at a news conference on Friday.

"This will be an important benchmark" in dealing with health issues for the city's immigrant populations, Health Commissioner Dr. Thomas Frieden told The Associated Press.

"With one of every three New Yorkers being an immigrant, this report on immigrant health is crucial to safeguard the health" of city residents, said Guillermo Linares, commissioner of the mayor's office of immigrant affairs.

According to the report, 24 percent of immigrant adults here for more than four years said their health was fair or poor, compared to 17 percent of foreign-born adults here less than four years. Obesity rates were higher among more established immigrants as well, at 16 percent compared to 12 percent of newcomers.

The report did not go into reasons for those increases.

The report catalogued differences between native-born and foreign-born adults in a number of areas, as well as between people from different countries of origin. Data were collected from a number of sources, including the city's count of births and deaths and community health surveys from 2002 and 2003 in which about 10,000 people are questioned every year.

Among native-born New Yorkers, for example, 80 percent of those surveyed had a regular primary care provider, compared to 69 percent of foreign-born adults. Among the foreign-born, those who were English-speaking were still more likely than Spanish speakers to have a primary care provider, 74 percent to 52 percent.

While only 9 percent of native New Yorkers under 65 were uninsured, 22 percent of immigrants in that age group were without insurance. The foreign-born also were less likely to take preventive steps such as getting health screenings for heart disease and cancer.

In certain areas, immigrants were in better health than the native-born, being less likely overall to smoke, be diagnosed with HIV/AIDS, or binge drink. However, some ethnic subgroups had higher rates of these health problems than the general population. Adults born in the Ukraine, for example, were more likely than native-born Americans to smoke.

The report issued some recommendations to address the health gap between native-born and immigrants, including making sure immigrants know their legal status cannot bar them from getting treatment; making translation services and culturally appropriate materials more readily available; and targeting messages such as anti-smoking campaigns to be culturally specific.

The data in the report are a valuable tool for all those who work with immigrants on health issues, Linares said. "It's important to be guided by this report in continuing to coordinate efforts to promote the use of preventive health care," he said.

Study: Some Paints in Asia Pose High Risk

BANGKOK, Thailand (AP) -- Some paints in Malaysia, China and India contain dangerously high levels of lead, as much as 300 times the legal limit in the United States, presenting a health risk to children, researchers said Friday.

With safer substitutes readily available, researchers from the University of Cincinnati in the state of Ohio called for better regulation of, or a worldwide ban on the sale of lead-based paints.

"There is a clear discrepancy in product safety outside the United States," said professor Scott Clark who led the study published in the September issue of Environmental Research, a peer-reviewed journal.

"In today's global economy, it would be irresponsible for us to ignore the public health threat for the citizens in the offending countries - as well as the countries they do business with."

In 1978, the United States introduced regulations restricting lead content in paint to 600 parts per million after studies showed that children who eat or breathe in flaking paint chips or dust can suffer brain damage and other health problems.

But Clark said he found paint containing dangerously high levels of lead easily available in hardware stores in Malaysia, China and India.

About 50 percent of the paint sold in China, India and Malaysia has lead levels 30 times higher than is permitted in the U.S., although some had as much as 300 times the American limit. Other surveys found similar levels of lead in paints in Indonesia, Peru and the Seychelles, Clark said.

In Singapore, where lead levels in paint are supposed to be held to the same standards as in the United States, about 10 percent contained too much of the metal, the study found.

"Lead-based paints have already poisoned millions of children in the United States and will likely cause similar damage in the future as paint use increases in Asian countries and elsewhere," he said. "Our findings provide stark evidence of the urgent need for an effective worldwide ban on the use of lead-based paint."Telephones weren't answered Friday at the China Coating Industry Association and China's State Administration for Quality, Supervision, Inspection and Quarantine.

Clark said his findings also underline the fact that Asian products decorated with lead paint are increasingly being sold in America. In recent years, products ranging from Chinese toys to Indian jewelry have been pulled from U.S. department store shelves because they contained dangerous levels of lead.

Clark's team sampled 80 paints in the four countries over two years. The countries were chosen at random.
